First attempts with compressor/spraygun

thats more the gun than you none of those patterns look consistent if you can afford it and dependent how much spraying you will be doing for the future get something like a devilbiss flg 5 or similar also your clearcoat dont know what your using but approx 2 to 1 clear and activator and upto 10% thinners

I thought it was candies that changed the depth of colour when more coats are applied not metallic basecoat.

Mixed up my clear and poured in gun all ready. Wiping panels, clumsy knocked the gun over And the pot thread snapped off.

Broken thread sitting on the gun. Lucky it is bsp so I can fix it and resume practise, but I will order a new gun this week.

These are the dust wipes I am using. They seem to be degreaser, no solvent, but dry quickly. Ive found that any roughness in the paint will pull fibers off that stick to the panel I was wiping these fibers when I knocked the gun. Going in the bin, what should I buy? Cant avoid dust so I need some kind of wipe.

Last, where can I buy some paint storage pots. Paint shop didnt have any. I am using a clean jam jar, but I dont trust it not to evaporate.

All fixed and first coat is on. I could immediatly see the basecoat orange peel, much worse than I thought.

But it glossed nicely ( my alkyd test peice just went wrinkly with clear)

Looks good from here. I do feel for your poor old spanners though. BTW, its not the best idea to mask with newspaper. The ink can have devastating effects.

The orange peel was not from basecoat, it was the clear going on bad with a much smaller fan pattern and too much air? gave two more coats and got some runs.

Plan is to order a new gun. Give this a few days to harden and flat the runs back, two small defects I need to touch up basecoat aswell.

Local paint shop has a gun for 50 and another 110, not sure what they are.

Its had a while to dry, the paint has really sorted itself out, smooth and any texture is gone. Still smells of solvent so I will leave it longer, but feels hard already. The runs are not too big or noticable, I could quite happily live with them.
TGM has some videos, using filler to help protect surrounding paint when sanding runs. Is this suitable for 1k paint? The holts cataloy knifing putty that I have, should not cause any problems?

Don't put 1k stopper round a run on 1k clear to try and protect the surrounding area, it will soften the paint and you'll end up making a mess. You have to use mixed polyester filler of some kind, but even then I would be wary with 1k.

Found most of the edges has very little paint and rubbed though. New gun is perfect for redoing the edges with it turned right down. I think next time I will give all edges a few coats before doing rest of panel. I did the same with clear.

Not sure what I had wrong to get the runs but the worst has put stripes in a small bit of basecoat. I guess I will be sanding that area back. I had full fan and two turns out on fluid with 0.8 tip and 25psi.

Don't know who told you hammerite has silicone in, it doesn't, it would suffer the same effect as other paints

Is that a cbr600 f4?

Iv seen people paint and get too much orange peel simply from putting too much down

metallic is a hard colour to start with let alone a first attempt, doesn’t look that bad
