im sure alot of you will cringe at this but after little practice i attacked my car okay its not a pretty site but its strong enough, my excuse for half the mess is its gasless

fool proof? well i got welding within an hour of having it out the box, joined some exhaust peices just to get the jist, managed togo through a o.2kg reel of wire in a night so bought some more today...

its a cement mixer the padle insire had come adrift from the drum and left a nice gash in the drum dripping cement everywhere, welded the paddel on and crafted a plate to cover the area

1983 Ford Fiesta, apart from the wings....and obviosly where th floor meets the sill shes pretty solid, the concerning thing is that it passed an MOT less than a month ago

havent a clue on the thicknesses of the sheet just scrap lying around ive cut and beaten into shape then cleaned up

messy but about the strongest point on the car


anything i can do short of going gasless to try keep things a little cleaner if not is it out the realms of possibility to convert a simple gasless to take gas cylinders

Ooh, I love the spatter!!!
Are you moving the torch a little fast old chap?
I'd slow it down to just quicker than burning through and give the arc a chance to do its thing. Keep the torch stable, don't move around. Move slow and easy.
Even flux cored should be better than that.
That is a shocking amount of spatter, I think you may be winning the competition (we havn't started it yet, but it may be time!!)

I know its sounds harsh, but theres not really any weld there, its all spatter.

Get yourself practising more.

Now I know why they say dont use gasless on car stuff. With that amount of spatter you are going to start a fire some where in the car. Dont expect it to pass its next mot.

You`re enjoying yourself anyway. Probably not a poorer combination for learning than a Sip and gasless wire. Practice on scrap a bit more as well as your car.Vary your settings. Spray some anti-spatter on your work.

I have done MOT standard welds loads of times using gassless wire. In any case that will be under the carpet and if the tester feels it as long as it feels like it is solid it will be fine.

Not saying you CANT do MOT welding with gassless just that the pictures clearly show "welding" repairs that should not pass a MOT and that the car should not have passed one pre "fixing" either.

In any case that will be under the carpet and if the tester feels it as long as it feels like it is solid it will be fine.

I would be more concerened with how the car feels about it in a smash than how the MOT test rules say cars can be tested without removing things so you can realy see it. How would you feel if a doctor dint bother to remove your clothing to see your injuries before treating you? Remind me never to buy a car from you.

Hey, it is OK, I don't sell cars. I have to agree with what you say, but the fact is that post-welding that car would pass an MOT. Not least because where the inner sill has gone is not a tested area anyway as it is not classed as structural.

I had/have that SIP welder and I can assure you those welds are not sound.

The weld will be sitting on top of the metal with zero penetration.

That metal plate could be levered off with a tooth pick.

Its not your fault, its the machine its just not a welder. Buy an arc welder for £50 and you'll see a massive improvement straight away with welds that could actually take load.

Nobody would ever pass that, more likely they would get a hammer and show you how you can hammer the bead off, leaving minimal scarring on the workpiece of where it was sitting.

Ths SIPs might not be wonderful, but the SIP 90 I tried could be made to work perfectly well. Produced some really neat welds.

it is actually solid i beat the living daylight ou it with a claw hammer, my MOT tester is actually really good with his job and really helpful it was the emissions he failed me on

and to be honest i was just going to buy a £50 arc in the first place but so many people moaned about how crap they are and ill never have any luck on the car with it

should i buy a cheap arc or save up for a propper mig

I know this is going to sound daft, but I say practice a bit more but do it on clean steel so you can find out how it should be. And can I ask what kind of face mask you are using and how dark the lens is?

Well then it probably has a shade 11 lens and at the ampage your using you will not be able to see a bloody thing through it. Trust me, you weld better when you can see what your doing.

If you order a new headshield make sure you also get a shade 9 lens.

not structural?? anything within 12cm(in any direction) of a seatbelt mounting IS structural.

i can just see whats happening when its all happening its a green tinge through the lens

cant see any specs on it or any of the paperwork but ill keep that in mind when buying thanks

Yep and by the shape of that it is at the back of the back door of a 4 door model and won't be within a foot of a seatbelt mounting. I could be wrong though.

and yes that is the seatbelt mounting

1983 fiestas were all 3 door (well,2 door hatch),but even so,you can clearly see the lower belt mount bolt screwed into the inner sill in the earlier pic/s.sorry MM,not criticising,just that mr sam should be aware for next mot time.
