Thanks Eddy, that would be much appreciated. As far as I know, there is no relay, and I've cleaned all the earths I can find, but I'm so frustrated I'm probably not thinking clearly. If you're still having trouble once you've changed the starter drop me a message, I'm near Rugby and can have a look for you, it sounds to me like you've got something causing voltage drop at the starter, i.e a poor connection somewhere, be it a bad earth or relay etc..
I'm thinking maybe the same thing, but have no idea where to begin or what bits to buy. I have seen starter buttons advertised but I'm a bit clueless at the moment. Also worth checking the ignition barrel, the missus freelander had a starting problem you'd turn the keynothing would happen and after a while of turning the key off and on it would start, after some quick fault finding traced it to the ignition barrel so temporarily fitted a push button start and now starts all the time
Bet that temporarily switch is still on there when you sell it ! if it works tends to stay that way, I have loads of temp fixes that still are in place, ArtherAlso worth checking the ignition barrel, the missus freelander had a starting problem you'd turn the keynothing would happen and after a while of turning the key off and on it would start, after some quick fault finding traced it to the ignition barrel so temporarily fitted a push button start and now starts all the time

starter circuit due to volts drop on a toyota estima diesel
They suffer with the contactors burning away in the main current starter switch in the solenoid for some reason, it is a common fault but you can buy just the contacts andf replace them .
But the signal wire has to have a very good connection because initially it turns the motor slightly which helps align and mesh the teeth with the ring gear because part of the solenoid coil is earthed through the armature and draws heavily on the signal wire before the main contacts connect and full battery current is connected through the motor, that then limits the current the solenoid draws to less than half to hold in the switch, whilst cranking
I think we need a new mission statement for this forum, how about something like....It Lives!
*cough* As long as we don't start trying to fix a Megane it'll be fine...I think we need a new mission statement for this forum, how about something like....

First it was puffernuffer's car, now yours, whose next ?
Well I did think that but I didn't have the heart to upset BB by mentioning it, that car has been the butt of enough jokes.*cough* As long as we don't start trying to fix a Megane it'll be fine...
Maybe we should have a get together where we all bring sledgehammers and put it out of its misery to cheer him up!Well I did think that but I didn't have the heart to upset BB by mentioning it, that car has been the butt of enough jokes.

Is that as reliable as a Megane then?ERRR, I have an Espace......
