and we should point out that not all vehicles have a starter relay, many dontThe jcb I was doing was a farm mechs own 3cx jcb and was weird there was nothing until I swapped the relays around and then I started to see the lights slightly dim when the key was turned so possibly had two problems slightly dodgey relay combined with the starter connection managed to get a lonnng screwdriver up to the starter to move the lucar and bingo away so we could lift the arms to get the engine covers off etc to see the connections.

He has changed the alternatorDoes it have a freewheeling pulley on the alternator? We had a focus and the pulley failed, it would drive the alternator sometimes and othertimes it wouldn't and it took a while to figure out what was going on, especially as the alternator warning light was controlled via the ecu.
Symptoms were the warning light would come on randomly and a voltmeter would show random readings but they didn't always match the light, whilst under the bonnet scratching my head I just happened to notice the alternator wasn't always spinning, new pulley sorted it.

If I said to an auto sparky look at the crimp he would think of these^^^ pictured, but if I said lucar he would be looking for this
