The jcb I was doing was a farm mechs own 3cx jcb and was weird there was nothing until I swapped the relays around and then I started to see the lights slightly dim when the key was turned so possibly had two problems slightly dodgey relay combined with the starter connection managed to get a lonnng screwdriver up to the starter to move the lucar and bingo away so we could lift the arms to get the engine covers off etc to see the connections.

and we should point out that not all vehicles have a starter relay, many dont

re the jcb it was doing nothing no reaction on the ign lights when first tested they just glowed and did not change and i wanted to test if there was a relay who's coils where being energized by the starter switch because the starter was difficult to even see, with the bucket down but by swapping relays the key switch started to show more load by the ign lights -----just------- dimming which then gave me the clue it was a low battery and starter fault combined.jumper leads and jiggle your lucar, it was going

lol, it looks like a spade connector, am I missing something? I can't actually see the connector unless I jack the car up and crawl underneath it as its behind the block. I suppose at least it doesn't get a shower every time it rains like old minis did!

spade connector are called lucar connectors in the car world,
crimp connectors are like this
the other connectors shown in earlier posts are called Lucars and are a slightly better quality connector ------usually.
If I said to an auto sparky look at the crimp he would think of these^^^ pictured, but if I said lucar he would be looking for this

even though they are both crimped on and both blade connectors it is just the way they are described as the snnoper knew what I was bleating on about

Does it have a freewheeling pulley on the alternator? We had a focus and the pulley failed, it would drive the alternator sometimes and othertimes it wouldn't and it took a while to figure out what was going on, especially as the alternator warning light was controlled via the ecu.
Symptoms were the warning light would come on randomly and a voltmeter would show random readings but they didn't always match the light, whilst under the bonnet scratching my head I just happened to notice the alternator wasn't always spinning, new pulley sorted it.

He has changed the alternator
But possibly using the original pulley
On the focus the pulley is attached to a short drive shaft and bearing block bolted to the block, alternator then attaches to that so the alternator could be changed without touching the pulley, I'm not sure how the fiat is setup?
It's not really relevant to the fiat but ford wanted nearly £200 for the pulley/shaft/bearing, however i did find someone selling just the clutch pulleys for around £60

next time it plays up use some jump leads to bypass some of the wiring
so battery neg to the engine block incase your earth is duff , and battery pos to the starter pos if you can reach it
if either of those fix it then the batt cables are shot

julianthegypsy never mind likin everyones posts get out jiggle ya lucar ----------- AND GET IT FIXED !!
I had a punto of the same vintage that did this when the imobiliser transponder failed to link to the chip in the key. This was intermittant and would also start straight away with a push as the early imobilisers just blocked the starter signal not the ignition. I think to prove it i put a supply straight to the starter solenoid and bypassed the ignition switch and it started every time. Long term i think i butcherd the ignition switch and key to remove the transponder bit, but it was a long time ago. being skint at the time i might have just made do until it went to that great fiat garage in the sky.

Is this an EU directive?? I have always purchased them as spade connectors. lol

Today's progress. Wouldn't start, as expected. Jumped no problem. Off to workshop, cleaned the earths from gearbox to chassis and battery to chassis. They were dirty but not obviously causing a fault if that makes sense. Battery had over 13 volts but still dead. Noticed that battery voltage dropped a lot as soon as the ignition was switched on (but not trying to engage starter). Something appears to be taking power as soon as the ignition is on. Couldn't get under the car to look at the starter as the ramps won't fit under the skirt 
. By that time the weather was looking very nasty so called it a day. Jumped the car and backed it up the hill ready to roll away when I'd finished putting tools away, locked up and it started no bother. We'll see if it starts again later. In deference to Norm, I won't like his post. (it only takes a second to show my appreciation, honest!)
