Failed tyre advice

Winchgirl had a blow out on the motor way ( luckily they are fine) She said they could here a drumming noise, they stopped and had a look around but found nothing, it failed about 30 mins later. Any ideas as to why?
Its a Kumo 11 years old not half worn.

looks to me that tyre has quite a few cracks over it how old is the tyre ?

hard to tel.l i had a new tire similar . ran over a part coil spring it dug in on the tread burst and ripped down the sidewall £125 quid up the swanny 4 weeks old

11 years old is quite old for a tyre, I changed all the Surf ones after 9 years as I was getting paranoid about them, they still had 6-7mm of tread though.

i brought a harison lathe back in my trail;er 60 miles at 70 mph it was well overloaded has mini wheels and tires over 12 years old . they were warm when i got back but didnt burst

Just checked the fronts 2017 last rear is identical to the failed one so will be changed, I don't want to rush out and swap all four but would be happier if I knew why it failed

If it was flubbering for a while before it went it could have been a lump of coil spring or something sharp, the hole has a clean cut on one edge.

the part spring slit down the side of mine the broken edge of it was like a knife

More likely a burst out through weakened, UV degraded tyre, a cut from a broken spring or similar would be radial, not across the tyre due to rotation...
You can also see cracks between the tread in other parts, indicative of a time-expired tyre. I think the maximum age for an MoT pass is ten years, less on a PSV.

Could it have been hit onto the edge of a pothole and then broken the cord/wires inside?

Given the age, it's likely there's been a cut that's exposed the cords to moisture, then it's just been a case of corrosion and time for the structure to reach the point it can't contain the forces anymore, at which point it's gone bang.

Thats what I was thinking.
I had exactly the same happen to me on Friday.
Looks identical although I didn't take a picture.
Something sharp has gone in and damaged the tread and the cords, this causes a flat spot in the tyre and that then causes the side to blow, or so I am told by my friendly tyre fitter!

I would say that has definitely hit something, though at 11 years old it's done it's time.

Safer if had done . The cracks alone would cause doubt as to it's integrity' .

Thats precious cargo, bite the bullet and put a new set of tyres on it.

Was it correctly inflated? Receny checked?

It is interesting how the steel cords look clean and seperate to the rubber - that almost suggests to me a manufacturing defect or heat has debonded them.
