Failed tyre advice

I am strongly of the opinion there is a lot of brand engineering going on. Just like Panasonic’s al TVs are made by vestal or are clones thereof, Michelin imho are far outstripped by the “budget” alternatives in longevity and grip. I stand by zeetex and a viable option, the company I work for only fit budget tyres and I know a **** tyre when I drive on one, I’ve also driven a lot on Michelin etc. I won’t buy anything but seemed now. They stop the car quicker in the dry and wet than the Michelin that where on there before, and last longer, the sidewalls don’t crack. They’re just better.

Well, I don’t visit car washes, or indeed do much car washing other than glass and lights - and mine show no signs of cracking, so . . .

I bought a trailer that had superficially fine tyres - deep tread, no sidewall damage - but close inspection at the base of the tread showed cracks. As an antitheft measure, combined with tyre preservation the wheels get stored in the shed when I’m not using it. Seems to be working well on both fronts at the moment.

Same with my trialling tyres - off the car when its back home, old set on, the competition tyres in the shed.

I don't do car washes either - I reckon wheel cleaning mild acid and pressure washers - fund all the brake calipers I sell in my garage every month.

I have seen it written - global warming and higher UV light levels attack tyres as well - but I doubt this to be true - we still getting the same hours of daylight in rotation to the sun.

Interestingly, I went into the local DVSA depot to get their official view on this thing about tyre age.

For HGVs and PSVs the limit is indeed ten years from date of manufacture of the tyre

For PLG, other than the usual tread wear and cords showing, puncture repairs in sidewalls etc. As long as there is no obvious impact damage or perishing of the rubber, they have no interest.

Was it correctly inflated? Receny checked?

It is interesting how the steel cords look clean and seperate to the rubber - that almost suggests to me a manufacturing defect or heat has debonded them.

Being a car tyre I doubt it will have steel anywhere apart from on the beads.

Have a read of your car tyres sidewalls it will say what material./where and how many layers.

Don't think I've ever had a tyre last more than 3 or 4 years on any of my cars, normally worn out by then!

Two things generally seem to cause cracking - BEV's and UV exposure, lots of tyres have cracks on the outside shoulder (due to UV exposure) and none or few on the inside shoulder, BEV's cause cracks due to the tyre being stretched by a combination of the extra weight holding the vehicle to the surface (so less lack of grip & no or little wheelspin) and the almost instant application of maximum torque twisting the wheel inside the tyre.
For lots of reasons, there's a good case (IMO) for BEV's to have pull-away torque limiting curves in their software, less tyre wear - and less tyre left on the road, less road wear and less d!ckheads planting the 'go pedal' and pulling out of junctions, barely in control and usually with no adequate gap meaning they then have to stamp on the brakes, as does the car they just pulled out in front of...

I know what you mean, I have been promising myself, my Yeti some Michelin Cross for ages.

My Yeti is still on its originals, but low mileage but can't afford Xs at the moment.

My dad bought his last Yeti new and didn't do a lot of miles in it. It came with Pirelli tyres on it. The steel wires inside started coming out through the treads

Goes to show even branded ones have their issues.

Can't remember what brand is fitted to mine, must take a look but came with the vehicle, mines a 2016 plate and only done 45,000 miles.

I checked condition and treads early this year, plenty of it but the tyres are 7-8 years old, that has me a bit worried.

I would like to buy some used decent steel rims, it's what comes first I guess.

Similar age car, his was 2017 and tyre failures started around 5 years old. Don't think he had much more than 30000 miles on it. He ordered a new Karoq to replace it from the same dealer, told them that if it came on Pirelli tyres that he wouldn't be buying it until they changed all 5 tyres. Fortunately it didn't.

I have recycled motorbike tyres for the rubber and it is a massive PITA if they have steel belting, which every tyre seems to have now due to cost cutting.

Many will also have kevlar/technora/nylon too.

I doubt you’d find any car tyre that doesn’t contain steel belts for decades now, unless it’s for historic vehicles. Even back in the 80s and 90s textile belt car tyres were very uncommon.
These days tyre construction is almost always an inner liner, two rayon or nylon plies, two steel belts, another nylon ply, then the tread. Other rubber and nylon strips are often added too.

That's why the Surfs tyres were still good at 9 years old then, a jet wash twice a year only

Did noy know that, I remember the old michelin xzl which I bought specifically as they had steel belted sidewalls as it made them very tough.

Ten years only applies to steer axles on hgvs, then can note it as an advisory on other axles, but not fail it.
Modern trucks eat steer tyres.

Talking of failed tyres, my son's friend asked if he could leave his car at our place while he's on holiday (live pretty close to airport). I happened to notice the state of his right front tyre.

Worst tyre I've seen in years, passenger side is only marginally better. Think a bit of advice upon his return is required.

I see so many like that. I just notice these things as I walk along the pavement. It amazes me the owners don't.

thats nothing was getting new tires fitted to my van and looked at the scrap tire pile . some were as bald as a badgers backside and down to the canvas .quite a lot were of high end cars . obviously some cant afford to run them and skimp on tires
