Facebook. Hoarding. Selling and Depression.

Its the clearing out that is the problem not so much the selling. It was more I was surprised and angry he ghosted me instead of just saying I dont want it now. I am very realistic on prices and often take stuff to charity shops rather than trying selling since facebook got really really greedy. Do you honestly think I was overpricing a Cot, Bumper, Mattress and Quilt at 30 quid?

Regarding the cot, it's worth that to someone. However, your problem is that you're over-estimating the amount of consideration/principles most have. They don't. That's people for you.

Unless you simply become brutal with your clearing out, it'll never happen. Totally drop the money aspect from your thought process in doing so, & simply class any money you may receive in the clearout process as a bonus.

I’m trying to work on the one in, one out principal - in the house as well as the workshop. If we decide to buy something we have to get rid of something else. Dealing with a couple of relatives who were hoarders the back end of last year was a real wake-up call for us.

Unless an item is really desirable collectable or really expensive, I fin FB a waste of time. At least with eBay its free to sell now and no fees, unless you are a business. Everything seems to sell eventually, although it can sometimes take months.

I am loath to throw anything away, but its not really about what it cost ........ the money is spent and gone ........ but for me it's about what it would cost to buy another one, and knowing I threw one away !

I am gradually coming round to the idea though.

I'd certainly stop collecting things you think are useful to grandkids as you never had them . . . you are a different generation, so I doubt your wants are their's.

Let their parents do that sort of collecting. And if they can't, they need to work out how to too.

Save your money for when grandkids actually need something - Uni accomodation, Uni text books, help with a car, etc.

I side step all requests for crap for my nieces - but I am putting something every month into a kids ISA I got my sister to set up for them - when they are 18 they can do what they want with it. With a childrens ISA, no-one can access it to empty it - kids, or parents (don't trust my sisters ex or indeed her) until the kids can aged 18.

And Matt F is very much more polite than I would be regarding storage of crap you don't actually need - bin it, forget it. Don't buy some other bargain you don't actually need to replace it. You'll find money lasts a lot longer!

Put a value on your time. And try to think realistically about how much time you do have to put to it all.

If you have a lot of low value/bulky/difficult to shift stuff a skip or house clearance company might actually work out cost effective.

It's easy for me to say that, harder to do!

Depression runs in our family; it was pretty much all my mother left me, and Xmas / New Year and now winter are the worst.

My entire house is cluttered mess; there's old ham radio equipment, computer stuff, cars stuff and stuff I used at work 20 years ago. And then there are three sheds and garage. A day spent tidying up achieves no discernible effect. I stay off Facebook as much as I can, except for a couple of (car) owners groups which are useful.

Yeah, he'll send you the money by money transfer, overpay, then ask you for the difference refunded.... and you'll never get the original money. Or some variant.

It is overwhelming dealing with clutter. I get overwhelmed when I look in the garage or our back room where we store stuff. I'm determined to make progress when oldest moves out next month though. I honestly don't want to spend the last years of my life surrounded by so much stuff.

Start with the easy stuff: books you've read, things that are broken, things that you really don't love. If you just bin/rehome/sell 6 things a week the progress will build up.

That's the thing to remember. It doesn't have to be all at once. Those few things weekly add up sooner than you realise.

Getting rid of stuff of the clutter type should be like cleansing the soul and should involve forgeting its value...If you lot here found out what i skipped and scrapped the last 4 months i would be banned from this forum and pelted with carrier bags full of dog sht...There are a lot of things worth more than money and a hassle free clean sheet is one of them.

@ukracer being a carer to a loved one is such a big task, for me it was the lonely hours that left me feeling alone and isolated from life, my hoarding and hobbies have a lot to do with those times, in the last few years I have given away or sold stuff I don't think I will get to use again, the bad part of that is thinking I will need it as soon as its gone but then I have less to think about and more time to organise what is still here, I found the best way for me was to piles of sell/junk/charity/mates/recycle
then get rid of a bit each week, I hope you feel better soon depression is hard to cope with, all the best mate

Having read all of the above- quite a bit of it resonates with me.
I have stored some stuff for 30 years- but can I find the pesky thing exactly when I need it? Guaranteed it will be needed two days or a week after it gets disposed of…

But I really like the ‘get rid of 6 things a week’ - that sounds manageable- and I do know much pit won’t be missed after the initial pain, and I will very much enjoy the extra space in the workshop.

Thanks @roofman - it seems you have protected many of us from ourselves- perhaps we all ought to send you some ’stuff’ as a reward

You definately need to stop fessing over FBMP
1) don't chase buyers
2 ) take offers to get rid of stuff
3 ) if it looks dodgy don't reply and delete
if posting there you need to expect T***ers simple . I've had more good than bad but that's not always the rule , you've had some sound advise here of decent people and you must stop beating yourself up over silly stuff you can't change and crack on with what you can change

My garage was already a tip when I had to further turn it upside down to make access for fitting the new cu and EV cabling. I had to take a little angle iron chipboard shelf unit down that I'd made to drill through the slab etc. Over the weekend I managed to refit the uprights and just ONE shelf, luckily at nom bench height:

I'm pretty much always on a knife edge at the moment and the littlest thing sends me spiralling. Tonight's main one was I couldn't find my M20 electrical tap. I'd gone in just to link this two 2 gang boxes with a coupler.

Everywhere I look there are linbins, cardboard boxes, totes and buckets full of stuff:

I used to be a right tinker for keeping stuff so one thing I do now when I've fixed or replaced stuff is the bits go straight in the bin/scrap hard to do at times instead of the that might be handy ohh that could come in for some thing , .......it's got to be done or you end up drowning in ...........stuff , I've amased quite a bit to go on the forum
