has anyone used the £225 english wheel machine from ebay, is it any good , does it need strengthening
has anyone made any extra dies? just for hobby use
Can't testify to how good it is but it looks identical to the one Chronos Ltd (model engineering tools & supplies) are selling for at a discounted price of £124.

That won't be good for much I don't think as the frame is too weak, not much depth and the wheel and dies are small. As soon as you put any pressure on, the frame will move apart and it would be difficult to use.
Silly question!?
I know what an English wheeling machine is but why the "English" and not just a wheeling machine?
Is there a different nationality of wheeling machine that is a different configuration from that we know as English?

Oh well , what does anyone recommend trying to save money but needs to be good
second hand would be good but cant find one and must have dies as they are expensive
This style of wheel allows you to make circles where the normal wheel can be limiting.
The old Chap who tried to teach me to use a wheel (a real craftsman) said they used them during war to make aircraft cowlings, as they could make with less parts so less chance of fatigue cracks at welded joints
To watch him gas weld thin ally was a thing of beauty, a couple of strokes with a body file & you had to hunt for joint did not seem to distort either, sold my old cast iron Edwards one to a guy in Ireland 4 strong men to lift it,
A steel frame is stiffer than the old cast ones.
Would recommend any books by Ron & Susan Fouriner
Have a look at this discussion on the same topic from a year ago:
