Without playing the devils advocate , I’ve got an old leaky stone cottage , as insulated as possible , currently saving to change the windows but due to being listed , it’s not a cheap solution , especially with slimline glazing , looking at about 12k all in plus painting .as for some reason I have to prove why 1950’s crittle windows are carp !

On a windy day , the wind whips through , if I put the boiler heating on for an hour , it will never get to a temp the boiler actually shuts off . So if during the winter it gets cold for weeks on end , the heating would be one solid . Last winter my partner was at home thanks to Cona , doing her degree via online , through the coldest period .

We had the fire lit all day , for a weeks on end . I clear fallen trees locally for free in Return for the wood . It costs me a few quid in fuel for the saw , a good workout chopping and splitting . All seasoned

What would be worse for the env my boiler or wood .

I don’t think we’ve got to 2022 to be made to feel guilty for doing what is financially based on our incomes . We aren’t burning car tyres ( yet) .

The government are only concerned , and he’ll bent on making taxes on fuel . If they were really bothered by the Enviroment , the “better” sources of fuel would be less prohibitive … gas prices have driven up eleccy ,,,,, but not the cost of wind / solar ,,, but those prices have risen too .

I won’t be dictated by those who are of the “do as I say not as I do “ government departments .

Plus we live in an era where wearing 23 jumpers and a pair of swimming goggles shouldn’t be the normal or expected

Electricity has increased a whopping 346% here in Norway. Because the suppliers sell it to the continent for a huge profit and want the same return on the power here.

The government was flat out trying to ban wood burners, actually buying the old ones off people in the hope they would go all electric. Thats gone quiet.

Firewood prices have gone through the roof, £350 per cubic meter is what I have seen advertised. I burn about 15 cubic per winter but I source it and split it all myself.

I will insulate the roof over summer, the walls and floors are mostly done.

There are hydro electric power stations all over the place here. The closest one to me is 15km. Yet I am expected to pay the same as a consumer in Germany for using that very same Electricity?

I'm with Shell Energy but the comparison sites are useful.

I've insulated my place to death for the change of use building regs requirements. It's a big old place with less bills than average, but it is normally a little cold. Shell prices are changing (/unit)

Electric: 25.271p to 32.300p daytime hours (28% increase); 10.497p to 17.526p for E7 night period (67% increase)

Daily standing charge is up by A LOT. 23.85p to 44.84p (88%). An increase of £1.47 /week or about £4.40 /month. That is just a really crass charge increase for nothing in particular - except for profit.

Gas: unit costs from 4p to 7.3p. An increase of a further 83% after about a ~67% increase on my rate back in August/September. Daily standing charge up by 1.1p (4%)

I don’t really pay too much attention to my prices looking at my bill I pay every quarter. Bloody price difference so far 130% increase.
I must admit I never really get too involved with online or in the papers because it’s not worth my emotion, it’s hard not to when this effects you. It’s nearly half the price of my bloody mortgage!

Does make you wonder if the whole price hike thing isnt a ploy to get everyone minimising usage while topping up their coffers, it will be saving them an absolute fortune and buy them a lot of time to upgrade the entire grid for this all electric malarkey.

You have to think of gov funding or subsidies like a fat person in Lycra,put the squeeze on any part and that space is displaced elsewhere. They wont shed the weight , it just moves things about a bit.

Let's face it we could drastically reduce our energy consumption by insulating homes better. It's not enough to "fit a heat pump" and see it as the panacea for all our energy woes. Just makes for good sound bites.

The government are woeful at implementing energy saving schemes and maintaining them. Look at the FiT rates on PV etc that encouraged early adopters but were then whittled down and in some cases dispensed with. They are simply not really interested in anything that will damage the revenue they get from fuel taxes.

On top of the insulation issue then air tightness has to go hand in hand with it. The stories you hear of mass builders spending the time on the show home and applying the air test results from that to all the other properties on the site where anything goes. On an estate near me they actually had no insulation in the walls whatsoever. I know one of the buyers.
