I've mentioned this before:
Near me there's a fertiliser plant that does that thing.
A friend was reminiscing about the few years he spent there and how all his workmates were dead now, mainly from some horrible cancers.
I think the penny dropped with him, eventually.
I'm glad I never worked in such an environment.

They look exactly the same as the 'candle' incandescent bulbs they replaced, when the shades are on them.

Not my house, so I've never paid any attention to my dads electric bills. It's only a few days since I saw his electric bill and wondered what was costing so much in an empty house.
My own monthly electric bill is barely £50 so it was wierd his was higher than mine.
Sorry I meant running cost wise.

Anyone changed supplers lately..... had a quick look on comparison site and they arent offering any comparisons for now?
Im with Edf and about to come out of a fixed rate and they have offered me a variable rate or a new fixed rate....... both eye wateringly expensive of course...
Currently paying £1900 a year for gas & elec, they now want £3400 variable or £5700 fixed...... what would you do?

When your deal ends you will automatically be protected by the price cap.
All the deals they offer are not subject to the Ofgem cap and will in almost all circumstances be more expensive.

I sometimes wonder what algorithms the computers use to estimate things, I've been using Shell Energy since last December on my mums house while it's empty and up for sale, used a bit of gas over the cold months keeping the central heating ticking over, but zero usage for the last 3 months, I've just had an email stating "we estimate you will use £130 of gas in the next month so should increase your direct debit"

Since I've fitted those bulbs his latest bill was £28.Sorry I meant running cost wise.
My own electric bill for the month up to yesterday was £47.50, which is a surprise as my daughter has been staying here for much of the last two weeks.....

Ofgem have told the suppliers to stop this. The smaller firms have complained as they use it for cash flow. The bigger firms are likely to comply to avoid additional scrutiny

Ofgem are probably all the customers have, but from the customer perspective ofgem are not fit for purpose. It was them that set the high cap that we are having to pay every month. The totally unnecessary high price of standing charges! Then the similar hike in electricity WTF?? I cannot recall hearing about Putin's role in this electricity scam.

If we didn't have ofgem we would have been paying more than we do now
They have the unenviable job of balancing what we pay against the risk of yet more companies going bust and adding more to the tax payer
The market will sort itself out is a govt mantra, it should add "once the shareholders have had their cut"
It is not ofgem that isn't fit for purpose, it's the privatised market that puts shareholder payout above all else, even profit

I can understand price rises....but not so big ones.I understand the gas price. Why the electricity rise? What if I have my electricity supply disconnected. Is the energy supplier going to charge me more for using only gas?
However the standing charge is just price gouging.

I'm developing a large project, simplified version is payback is calculated on energy savings per year, divided by cost of project to get simple payback in years
Everyone thought with rising prices our payback would plummet and people would be crying out to sign up
Except commercial standing charge has jumped massively and is not included in the calculations, just unit price, so even if we could meet 99% of the energy demands the client still has the obscene standing charge
Great when a market works for the user
