Gear cutter for a vertical mill. First and only time I ever tried it.

This is why I was joking about the full depth of cut. Took me about five goes advancing the cut bit by bit and a full afternoon.

If you think of a gear cutter as a lathe tool, you could take quite large passes with very slow infeeds until it starts chattering. That's why gear hobbing machines are built heavy.

Well today I been mainly shaping. Went well except for 2 teeny errors i.e. wrong face and wrong
direction. Trying to make a QCTP mill cutter grinder. On 2nd can, so last typed message tonight. G'night all.

Today...The thing I like about the shaper is I can produce this with a simple 8mm lathe tool. The dovetail is a doddle using angled top feed. Don't need dovetail cutters for the miller. Might be a bit too chunky, but not finished yet. Piece of spare bar stock MS. Better fit than the ones that came with the QCTP.

A Student. Cheap chinese QCTP. The post itself is passable, but unlubricated and full of grit. Stripped cleaned and Molylubed. Toolholders are not accurately machined on depth and give varying fits on lock but passable. Shim is a way round it.
Not listed anymore. But seller is and has 250-400. Works! What more can I ask?
Following table gives sizes. Not the highlighted one. The 3/4" spindle was the one I got.

I'd recommend going for the CXA 250-333, which is the gib (wedge) style. Much more rigidity, but also more expensive, of course.

No it's one on the worst bits of welding I can safely safe, I every done in my entire life. I'd made a piece for the ML7 that was something for the toolpost 10yrs + ago. I had machined out the block for the indexer and it worked out to be the right sort of diameter for the milling tool I want to sharpen. Ah!, I thought. That'll do. But I needed it to fit to the toolpost on the Student. It wasn't thick enough to take the dovetail. No problem!... weld a piece of scrap to it and clean it all up together.
It's this point that I got muddled.......thinking dovetail needed to be on the face (should be on the end) I tried to fit it in the shaper vise....midge's too wide......so that's where it 3 jaw came in. No way was I lifting and fitting the heavy 4 jaw for this.
Suffice to say it's heading to the scrap bin, unless I can salvage it.
All will be revealed if I succeed.

Couldn't agree more. But as you say cost. However just now looked at prices and they are comparative, just not available anywhere I looked. Seem to be US biased?

I wasn't prepared to spend much, because I wasn't convinced of the gains of moving away from the turret 4-way. Still not, really. The only downside to the turret is if the other tools are in the way. Arranging them was a Rubik job. With me it isn't a cost limit, it's justifying to myself that's it's worth it for a semi-hobbyist (I repair my small-holding machines). Cars/bikes, don't do it for me...machinery does. Anything that does a job.

Reason for the terrible welding......gas had run out almost immediately I started. Maybe a bit porous? Was tempted to use the cored wire but not much joy in past. Electrode +ve for fluxed?

The last time I attempt gasless welding All resolved now. Held in place with one tack while I fathom it out. Sawing the old weld has cost me a power hacksaw blade. As we all know, welding without gas produces Kryptonite. Even Superman can't cope with that? The dovetail's thin at the knee, but doesn't need to be substantial as it's only a guide and won't be subjected to great forces. Wanted to make the block to swivel for side grinding, hence tack weld. Or could weld it vertically? Ident yet to be made.
Took 3 attempts to create dovetail as I overcut the other 2. It's a fine line on fitting. But easy enough to produce.

All went well, TIG with Pyrex lens cup, making new arbor, then broke the !!!!!ing disc. Silly mistake. Taking a shortcut. Slapping own legs is diffcult! New disc on slow boat from China ETA latest....11th Mar.

Had a go at animating the sequence for gear cutting on the shaper. Unfortunately Blender won't keyframe boolean operations out of the box, so I just ran through it manually. I used a 100mm blank and a 6-1 mm tapered tool (arbitary). I rotated it 2 degrees per pass and advance horizontal feed by tan of 2deg x radius (50mm) gave 1.75 mm. There is nothing precise, certainly not the tool profile. But I ended up with a shape resembling a tooth profile. Getting it to progress to the next tooth is next issue. The feed link on the shaper would be disconnected from the bed which would be stationary and attached to the unit instead. I need to hone up on tool profiles for gear cutting. But at least the concept works. The aim is make it produce a complete gear autonomously.

I respectfully disagree. That setup saved my Mighty Warco more than twice now!
