I wear gloves all the time these days....unlike hands they're disposable!

The problem (I've found from personal experience) once skin becomes sensitised it seems anything and everything will set it off.

Used to have a steam heated Trichlorethane vapor degreaser at work. All those words togheter in the same sentence would make H+S heads spin. Made hands nice and tingly. Gloves were unheard of.

Hi, In the early 80s when I worked on the buses the works next door had a hot trich tank. One Sunday evening one of the guys was in doing some work and fell in it, He managed to get himself out and crawled to the wash room, stripped off and lay in the trough with the taps on and passed out. He was only found when after he didn't return home and his wife sent his son down to find out where he was. He survived but had ill health afterwards for a long while. Subsequently there were a lot of suits with clipboards around.

We've been using (both types ) for ages. Its a chemical; caution to be exercised, with liberal use of Common sense. So long as its not sold out

I had a lucky escape with Dye Pen Remover (whatever that is). In the Steelworks we used it in big vats.....dip a casting in the dye, leave it for a while and then dip it in the massive remover tank, then finish it off with fresh clean remover and then chalk.....It was all in a room with those plastic strips as doors.....I stayed too long and was on my way to unconcious when someone came in and found me wobbling....I was about 17 at the time

Best not to use neat washing up liquid or degreasers on skin. Degreasers always take a lot of manual scrubbing to work instead I prefer to let stuff soak in petrol in a sealed container, or diesel if "clean and oily" is good enough.

If Im doing a dirty job then a squirt of hand cream or barrier cream helps, stops the dirt absorbing so washes off much easier. Gloves help but they always get a hole or fall apart before the job is done.

I used to be like that...but my mate who is a builder told me he used to have hands like mine and wished he'd worn gloves when he was younger instead of waiting till he had a problem....made me think.

It isn't so much the dirt it's more the unknown substances that you are absorbing through the skin...who knows what nasties are in old engine oil and all the solvents and cleaners.

No different to eye protection....why wait till you lose an eye?

Besides, as I said to someone recently: I survived twenty odd years of marriage; I'm obviously invincible.
