Elbow Grease

Have been using the spray elbow grease for cleaning oily/ greasy parts for a couple of years now, it is actually quite good, spray the parts, brush with water on paintbrush then rinse off with water hose . Some time ago when I used a lot of the spray the backs of my hands came out in hundreds of tiny cracks, though nothing of it and it all healed up fine. Yesterday I noticed they also make Elbow Grease washing up liquid and bought a bottle. I usually use cheap Aldi washing up liquid for pre washing my hands before I come out of the workshop, last night I used Elbow Grease, having forgot about the previous experience and today the backs of my hands have gone same as last time. I wonder what chemical is in it to cause this, ingredients list on the back of the bottles is pretty vague.

It could be Sulphates or Sulphites......they are used to make froth but are known to dry out the skin

Bizarre that something that you're supposed to immerse your hands in can irritate the skin

ok, The amino ethananol is an irritant. Stop the exposure and the situation should go away. Best to use gloves with products like this

washing up liquid is usually quite safe. If your getting a reaction it could be the limonene, gives it a lemon scent. It’s a known skin allergen

try non lemon scented products and see how you get on

This is the thing, your not supposed to immerse your hands in it. MSDS states use gloves then doesn’t give advice on which type. Typical rubbish MSDS

Thanks Parm, I just imagined without reading the instructions that any wash up liquid would be ok for cleaning hands. Suppose it's ok for the housewife when just a squirt is used in a sink full of water. Well, lesson learned, that's quite dam sore at the moment.

Well as I said above it is a great help for degreasing but I would have thought the manufacturer should have put a clearer warning on the bottles.

Yes well saying 'skin irritant' means nothing to me, I've seen that on many products that I have used with bare hands. Something more like 'Wear Gloves When Using or skin especially around Knuckles will resemble an egg shell that has been stood on and Will Burn Like Hell. I woulda understood that.

Used to have a steam heated Trichlorethane vapor degreaser at work. All those words togheter in the same sentence would make H+S heads spin. Made hands nice and tingly. Gloves were unheard of.

I suffer from contact dermatitis so use gloves for everything (this annoys folk when I am using rotating equipment ) but if I don't then my hands become very sore indeed!
Washing up liquid if used neat just cracks my skin up but there is a warning message on the bottle

I wear gloves all the time these days....unlike hands they're disposable!

The problem (I've found from personal experience) once skin becomes sensitised it seems anything and everything will set it off.
