are u looking for stuff to doYou're up in the rocky north though!
I've got a reading of between 17-19 ohms in my house. I was thinking of banging another in for good measure!

I've actually seen so called electricians pouring water over the rod to get readings down in sandy soil![]()
They realised that pme was mostly underground supply and hitting services was more likely.
Issue is only 2 brands have alternative means of disconnection
Well everyday is a school day, just learnt my out buildings aren't earthed properly. We're on a PME supply, when we moved in the out buildings had a bit of 6mm T&E on a catenary from an MCB in the board. I changed this to an underground 10mm SWA and replaced the board in the outbuildings and rewired them, looks like I best drill a hole through the floor and get an earth rod in and disconnect the earth to the house.
This is quite a useful link too, https://professional-electrician.com/technical/stroma-certification-supply-chain/
Thanks guys.
Basically, amendment 1 of 18th ed, changed the regs to allow "alternate means of disconnection", allowing a new type of EV charger to be fitted - that don't need an Earth rod.

Issued feb 2020?Amendment 1 is out for consultation (until 20th December 2020), thus the regs. Have Not changed Yet!
Please don’t disconnect your main earth just yet.
There is so much crap spoken about it being ‘illegal to export PME’ spoken by people who don’t really know what they are trying to prevent.
At the moment you have a very good earth connection provided by the DNO somewhere less than 0.35 ohms. There will be multiple earth rods all the way back to the transformer. All the joints will have an earth rod.
If you TT the system you will be reliant on a single earth rod that’s going to have up to 200 ohm resistance. If the bit of wire going to the earth rod gets cut by the lawnmower you’re entirely reliant on the crappy Chinese RCD for fault protection.
The main reason for TTing an outbuilding is if you lost the neutral leg in your supply. This would result in everything rising to 230v (as the neutral and earth is bonded in your cutout). Potentially if you are stood in your wet muddy shed and touch something metallic (and bonded) you’re going to get zapped.
But which electricians TT their outdoor sockets? The risk is exactly the same...
None of this constitutes electrical advice and I appreciate there are times when TT makes sense. You should get proper advice. But if the sparky says ‘TT it’ I’d ask him why, and then ask him if he also TTs his outdoor sockets.
As an aside, there’s nothing to stop you sticking an earth rod in the ground & leaving your PME earth connected if it makes you feel better. Yes you could end up earthing the whole street in some wild fault scenario but the alternative would be no earth at all...
there is a lot of humming and haring with various testers on the subject of outbuildings just make it a tt supply and everyones happy its not worth arguing over .asfar as the earhwire getting damaged with a lawnmower wont happen as the cable has to be protected and the rcd going faulty is very rare only ever seen one faulty that wasn't tripping in 50 years the rest were burning out due to bad workmanship overload or loose wires![]()
mk did a recall on some of theres 7 years ago . I relaced the ones I fitted and was paid £70.00 for replacing themHad a batch of bad rcbos once other ones where fine.

Now I'm confused!
Amendment 1 has been out for a while now, EV charging. Amendement 2 which is due in 2022 is currently out for discussion/feedback, you can stick your 2 penneth worth in if you fancy. The biggest potential change they're trying in amendment 2 will be making AFDDs compulsory.
Afdds id put up with, but the price will **** customers off. But i do my best to avoid CU changes as they are normally a can of worms riddled with historic fualts
ive changed loads with faults and borrowed neutrals on on over the years what id do was say to the punter il come and test wiring 1st and if alls ok il fit the board the next day if faults id fix them all 1st then come back and do the board

Its amazing we all survived with these, as found in my house when I bought it. Spot the deliberate mistake.
