So if I read the diagram correctly, it's first port of call post pump is filter. Therefor filter must be blocked?

You can see the relief valve below the filter, it dumps excess pressure back into the sump.

The filter can't be blocked or else the oil light wouldn't go out. It must be being by-passed, but even if the bypass valve (in the filter itself) was open I would expect some leakage into the element. I wonder if the bypass valve flap or ball or whatever it is, is missing so allowing a complete short circuit through the cannister?

Do you mean ByPass or Relief valve. You are describing the relief valve, the bypass valve, if fitted, will be in the filter itself

Are you sure it is the correct filter with the miles you have done the oil has to be circulating & as filter is first point oil has to be flowing through it or even if the BPV opens a certain amount of oil gets to the filter element.
Do you have an after market oil cooler fed of an adapter between the engine block & filter?

^^ +1 if the bypass is open oil goes down the centre, underneath the element and back up the outside of the element (or vice-versa), which would be left soaking in oil.

Hi, When you say you can see the white element inside do you mean looking in the centre hole or the ring of holes round it? If you mean the centre hole (then you are looking at the clean side) and that is OK. If you can see it through the outer ring of holes then there is no anti drain back valve fitted.

camera makes it look dry but its as oily as I would have expected a top end to look bearing in mind it was last fully run in November.

It's got to be going through the filter - there's no way oil could find it's way across the filter. In photo #2 are you sure the white bit isn't the ant-drain valve and not the filter media?

Sorry to ask the obvious, but it's difficult not having the thing in my hand!

I'd open the can up and have a look inside.

I suspect the valve was upside down. In the last picture showing the bung of the plunger. It would have been against the end of the can so can't open either way? Question is, how could the oil still circulate??

I might have just missed this in the text but have you removed the cover from the oil pump? you shouldn't be able to see the workings like that. Also the recess in the block where the filter screws looks bone dry as well?

The only way oil could go through this style filter is if the valve was this way up. In through the outside and out via valve through the centre.
