Drilling Holes - I need some help

How long do you estimate it will take to drill a single hole into masonry (Plaster over brick/block work) with a 5.5 mm diameter drill bit used in a Makita LXT 2Kg masonry drill set for rotary hammer action. The holes will be deep enough for a 4x50 mm wood screw and wall plug.

Im estimating from previous experience that this should take no more than about 10 seconds per hole

Any suggestions please

it depends on brick density, an engineering brick could take that long, but I would think with normal red bricks it should take no longer than 3-4 secs to a depth of 60mm

10 seconds sounds about right to me but halve that for sds

It will take you longer to get the drill out, plug it in and insert the drill bit than it will to do the drilling unless you are turning the wall into Swiss cheese.

Its quicker with a sharp drill too. Just face it up on a wheel

I've seen people take what felt like days to put a single hole into a wall.

And when they were done, it was still in the wrong place...

Forgot to answer the question, just had a go and the actual hole with my Bosch 2kg SDS and a 6mm drill into old red common took less than 4 seconds to do the actual hole to a depth of at least 55mm

I'm currently investigating a possible claim for carpel tunnel syndrome caused by exposure to hand transmitted vibration. The individual is a maintenance person in an office building where over the last two years they have done the absolute minimal of works. However with the advent of the internet, the availability of information which isn't understood the individual has made some quite exaggerated claims which Im learning are simply quite ridiculous. He thinks he can get a big pay out.

The best one is that he claiming a one off project over the course of a single day where he installed some electrical trunking on a brick wall covered in plaster. He states that he installed 12 meters of trunking with 6 screws per meter of trunking. He is claiming that he used a battery drill to make a clearance hole in the plastic, about 2 seconds per hole, then used a Makita 2 KG SDS masonry drill to make 5.5 mm dia hole approx. 50 mm long. The issue is that he is claiming it took him 30 seconds to make each hole thus giving him a total exposure duration for this element of the task (12 x 6 holes = 72 holes. 30 secs per hole x 72 = 2160 seconds = 36 mins !) When I make the exposure duration of around 10 mins maximum.

I simply do not believe that it will have taken so long to make such a hole. I suspected that his information is biased to be in his favour and you have all confirmed what I thought/ suspected both from my own experience of doing stuff and watching others.

As this is most likely going to court his written information that he has provided is now gospel and will be scrutinised/challenged by others in the same fashion. It sad but this individual has no grounds to be making a claim as there are other significant factors that have come to light which do not bode well in his favour !!

Daft init when someone asks a seemingly bizarre question you have to try it !! I was going to get my makita later and drill an old brick, did try testing it on the old brick on my shoulders but kept getting the angle wrong looking in the mirror !!

Maybe I could claim for white finger also, coz after testing your theory, I have a tingling in the finger tips. I also have two holes one on either side of my head, maybe I will be able to claim for other thing too, coz when I put the drill back in to test depth, I can't hear on that side !!

I think you need a clearance hole. There may be one sighted elsewhere.

Hi, Seriously though people making claims like this annoy me, trying it on or trying to get something for nothing by playing the system. Makes it worse for people making claims for legitimate reasons, then get tarred with the wrong brush.

Ah well you see -------you need train-ing to drill them
You also need to check for conductors before starting.

But Norm, what was the item that caused the tingling in your finger tips ?

With your multidisciplinary skills in engineering, fabrication, electrickery and general tinkering around are you sure this isn't the making of another thread potentially under the Entertainment and Leisure heading

I thought white finger was caused by making and throwing snowballs--------- because ------first they get white, then go numb, then they start to tingle when you run a hot tap on them.
Ha another claim ------never thought about that-------- coz you have to throw snowballs when its snowing at work------- its the law.
