I can remember just before the minimum wage came in, the company that I worked for didnt give a pay rise to increase the wages to the minimum, to make up the difference the introduced an "attendance bonus" of £15 a week. To get this you just needed to turn up on time Monday to Friday (or could be up to 3 minutes late a day). half of the people didnt manage to get the bonus, and of course you had the regulars who never turned up at all on a Friday after being paid on Thursday, going back to when they were weekly paid in cash.

Exactly right. Having a job in the first place should be an incentive. Some need to loose there job an have to hit rock bottom and struggle for a while. They would then appreciate it more

Not really. They either want the job or they dont.
If you engaged someone on day work at your house and monday they didnt bother turning up. Tuesday they were late. Wednesday amd Thursday they spent half the day gawping at there phone making calls would you be happy handing them there money when they sent you the bill.

I am perhaps 2-3 weeks away from signing up to an agency for work (hopefully not but it’s my last resort)
Previous experience is being treated like scum by a manager who hasn’t a clue. I will do what is asked of me, do it correctly and to the regs and turn up every day. It’s not difficult to do what is asked if you need the money

Not sure it’s an entirely new phenomena- I remember my uncle (a brickie by trade who’s in his 70’s now) who famously never turned up for work on a Monday for years, in fact in the building trade around here you were considered odd if you did roll in on a Monday, given that most people had a skin full on Sunday.
I guess the difference would be he knew he wouldn't be paid for it, and the rest of the week he worked his butt off come rain or shine.

The whole "its a privilege to work (here)" thing is, in my opinion, a nonsense.
There is more than one employer. Anyone with some sense and motivation can get "a" job. So its not like an employer can get away with paying rubbish and treating people rubbish. Possibly one or the other, but certainly not both.
If you cant get staff for non-skilled labor, then you're kind of doing something wrong.

Exactly my experience with agency, decided then that I do me and if that’s not enough I’ll go elsewhere. Very rare you get thanks for going above and beyond and it rarely stands you in good stead when the axe is falling on the workforce. Current boss is very, very different, so I enjoy going the extra mile for him however he is a single exception

I was tought from an early age by my father, (who was a cripple and still worked every day)........u don't work u dont eat ........but now with social welfare it dosen't pay to go to work..
I ran a wimd turbine development workshop........in the end bit the bullet and recruted agency staff, the best ones were kept on full time........
job done....not cheap tho.........

I know of 3 small Co that have got rid of all employees & make a better living, with less hassle, then if it's wrong there is only you to blame.

But that only works to an extent....work / life balance and limited production capacity.
Simple facts are you will never get rich staying within the law and working for someone else.
So you need to decide what it is you want out of life.......personally i could not sell for myself but could sell for others who had the right gear to sell. I dont mean dodgy. Just stuff i could add "support" to.

I could be wrong but I don't *think* there's actually any legal minimum requirements for warnings etc, it's only recommended that you should follow acas guidelines.
If you have a specific written warning/grievance procedure as part of your terms of contract (Most places would) then you should obviously follow that, else you'd be opening yourself up to all sorts of possibilities for claims etc.
Not really the same....trade work is usually quoted for by the job....so its either done and paid for or the opposite.
If you are paying them regardless of whether they turn up or not.....some will take advantage......

My pal was a Construction Manager - on one site the bricky squad used to knock off halfway through Thursday mornings. When queried, their answer was "We've made enough money for the week".

Well there was a similar tale about maintenance workers in a hospital, if they did more than say 5 hours overtime, they kicked into the next tax bracket (40 odd %, rather than 23%) and they actually lost money.

One of my lads is finnishing up at the end of this year and for the last 3 weeks i have been putting the feelers out trying to find an apprentice young roofer with good prospects etc....not had a single lad show any interest

The problem is young people don't get enough guidance, they need a bit of a push. Also sadly society now has a downer on jobs that involve working with your hands (which we all know on here also means working with your brain). How many times have you heard some twit saying about someone, "oh they are only a mechanic" or "oh they lay bricks for a living", or something similar. Where as people who work in an office and shuffle bit of paper about are seen to have it made.
