I thought, for one minute, you were going to recommend getting rid of the swarf by shaking out the bottom of yer trousers.

Nothing compared to what you can get in the back of a series1 Sorento with the seats folded flat. Especially if you don't care about damage or filth
Done the same with a Renault 5 and then a Peugeot 106 - seats out, rammed full. Front seat and footwell full below level of the windows too.
Get some strange looks for some reason
7 ft limit and a permit needed for trailers in Bradford council area. Not yet been tested on whether they mean 7ft overall length, or 7 foot long load area . . . but I can me making mine as wide as you are allowed and the 7ft long they require as I don't think they spec a width

If you make it too wide you will need to be escorted by a "wide load" van

I'm a regular at my local tip, so don't usually have any issues. You need to book in advance for weekends, but not for weekdays. When a new guy started, he saw me pull up, and came running over to say I needed a permit, being in a pickup. I don't think he'd ever seen a Hilux Surf before, and was most confused when I walked him round and pointed out it was a car

Believe it or not, that idea (or a slight variant of it) had already been used by British POWs in WW1. In fact most of what was portrayed in The Great Escape was practiced to some extent in WW1 as well - tunnels 18x12", 60 yards long, forged docs, uniforms turned into civvy work clothes, even a photo lab for IDs.
The Great Escaper by Simon Pearson is the biography of Roger Bushell (Bartlett aka 'Big X' in the film, played by Richard Attenborough). Fourth out of the tunnel, he was one of the first to be shot when recaptured.
The Escape Artists by Neal Bascombe is a roundup of WW1 escapes - albeit written by a Yank, a bit of proof-reading (e.g. 'anti-artillery' for 'anti-aircraft') would have been nice and fewer Americanisms (snuck, ffs), but well-researched.

Our local scrap metal dealer will still take swarf; the guy was a bit surprised when I turned up with a few carrier bags of the stuff. He let it go through as solid though it traditionally fetched a lesser price. He said they used to get hundreds of tons of the stuff from local engineering firms but they've nearly all gone.

Last time I went to my previous sacrppie, the tall 360 grabber thing was "sweeping up" using a ball of something that looked like really coarse swarf. Looked about as effective as you'd imagine. I go to a different one now, mostly as it's closer but partly as I feel the puncture risk is less.
Round here if you put any metal at all outside it barely touches the ground! Mostly Eastern European types & they will lift anything including stuff you didnt want taking.
As for the tip we know have to book & it generally works. But I cannot stand the jobsworths, Before Father in law died before he stopped driving he took a toilet pan & wash basin down the recycling centre, So 82 year old bloke gets out the car struggles with them to the skip & gets told "Sorry mate cant dump that here you will have to take it to pitsea".
So next day i put them in black sacks & they went in the skip anyway.

As has been mentioned, a scrap yard will take it without account if you don't want paying.
Or just get an account. It's easy enough.
My trick at the local tip is to ask a question as soon as I get there. Specifically seek out an cooperative before they come over. You then seem to be off their radar / a "friendly" / etc

I sawzalled one up.
Then I found a local tyre place that I could just pay so as I didn't have to!
I did have a fair stack though.
I think if you had a sheer it would be ok, but sawing them up stinks and gets black stuff over everything.

Evo circ saw with the tct blade takes seconds, when I was banger racing I used to prop a bit of plywood up between my and the tyre to catch the debris, do a tyre in 3 cuts, took seconds and some diesel on the blade stopped any rubber sticking when it got hot
