Disposing of swarf

I'm pretty sure if you don't want anything for it, your local scrap yard will take it FOC. Fred Lloyds in Pontypool does, I do have an account with them but had a cooker to get rid of, wasn't worth weighing in so just rocked up, asked if they wanted it FOC and left it there.

Getting an account is no hardship, money goes straight into your bank

i used to work for them...well GD environmental anyway, same owner...they may have changed since i last tried to use them but they wanted business details off me before letting me do anything.

S&L recycling in New Inn were my go to but they went to a cash card system a while back which was a weird experience...

if i dont have any joy at the tip next week ill give fred lloyds a go

If you are generating such vast amounts of swarf from home, perhaps you should consider a commercial license.

Hate to break it to you like that but regular volumes of non commercial waste easily fits in the bottom of a regular bin...

Not that I would know of course.

Tried that, scrappy doesn't want it, says there's no value to it for him...I've left it in open boxes, black bags and what not, just gets left there once they know what it is. Doesn't help we only have 1 actual scrap man round here too

bag some up and just put it in dustbins at flats i got shot of 10 bags of krap out of garage doing it

but when your regular bin only gets collected once every 3 weeks, you need all the space you can get in it...

i know...i have 80 litres of it that is so compressed i can barely lift the bin

I have been known to take some things that I don't want in my bin, a small piece at a time, and drop them in public bins that I pass on my way to the pub. I've also been known to get home with them still in my pocket, for the smaller things. For example if I have to dispose of a credit card (in days before I had a propane blowtorch) I'd cut it into small pieces and distribute the pieces across several bins spread over three miles. Yeah, stick that back together, identity thief!

we get cardboard and plastics weekly, household every 3 weeks and when its running, garden waste every 3, offset from household by 1...there is talk of making the bins smaller too, we are already on 3/4 sized bins compared to the original wheelie bins

You might be able to burn uncompressed swarf in a bonfire/wood stove....

Not actually tried that myself but depending on the size of the bonfire you might just end up with a nicely iron rich soil.

Are you in Birmingham?

I was staying with a nice lady there last month. She was not a happy bunny !
She has always worked and paid council tax (less 25% single discount).
Local services stopped collecting recycling bins or (paid for !) gardening bins more than a year ago.
Main rubbish bins should be emptied every week but often aren't so they are put out even if they are less than 50% full

The binmen have been on strike for more than a year asking for better pay.
Latest news is the temporary drivers who have been collecting the bins since then have now also gone on strike, they want pay to match what the original drivers are asking for.

Back on topic, if you add magnesium swarf can you not incinerate it yourself?

Plan B: ask your neighbours if Santa brought a new washing machine for Christmas?
Take the old box off their hands, fill with a concrete paving slab (to stop it blowing away / ballast), fill with your swarf, (optional) add some Ebay / Amazon stickers, put outside your front door and hope the well meaning fairies take it away for you?

as above i used to got to scrapman when i was doing up the house took a bit down there paid for breakfast here and there but dont get much now so if i want it out the way i used to just drop and go as long as you where not asking to get paid and its just metal they just take it

to be paid you have id so if its nicked they can trace it no one nicks stuff to give it away free only thing they have said he will not take is cans (coke,beer)he used to take them but they been blown around his yard and every where over other people and took to much time to clear up after once or twice he kicked it in the head

only reason i take it there is so the council/private corp just dont benefit from all the free stuff

Just goes in with/under all the smaller bits of scrap in an old 45 Gallon oil drum with the lid cut off. Then take the lot to the scrap yard and get something that's marginally better than nothing for the the lot. But always make sure I've got enough higher value stuff onboard to make it worth the trip/very high puncture risk.

It's such a low value/density thing, you really don't want to be adding any "work" to it at all.

Tricking someone into taking it away is likely to end up with it being tossed out of the van.

We know the type of people who collect scrap. They are not environmentally friendly.

they open boxes round here to see whats in them...when we left our old dryer out, we put it on the pallet the new one came on and put the cardboard box back over it, noticed a few times it had been opened for inspection before it eventually vanished

I just watched Bullitt first time for a long time. What a great film and what a great actor Steve McQueen was too. It is a lot more subtle than I remember but like a fine wine, has improved with age as, at my age, I begin to understand the complex interactions of the characters in it.

I'll put the Great Escape back on the must watch again soon list.
