Disposing of swarf

Local council won't take it, local scrap yard is by account only and scrap man isn't interested.


I've got an 80 lite garden bin full of mixed swarf and off cuts, the lathe needs cleaning and I've got a few decent jobs coming up that will create a fair amount too...

Best way to get rid of it?

put it in a box , leave it beside the car tail gate overnight ,,,

by tomorrow morning your problem will have vanished , along with the box

I'm surprised your local scrap collector isn't interested.
Any idea why?

So does mine, but Hitler on the gate wants to inspect everything that's brought in and considers swarf and metal off cuts to be commercial waste, needing an account and waste carriers license...but I can go chuck lengths of box section in as freely as I want.

I'm sure it's just a way to get more revenue

As said above, can you do a few kg at a time mixed in the bottom of other assorted “stuff”?

That's what I'm doing at the mo but doesn't seem to keep on top of it...our recycling boxes aren't huge so it's pretty noticeable and the household bin only gets collected every 3 weeks, but which time I've created more swarf than I've been able to get rid of

Tried that, scrappy doesn't want it, says there's no value to it for him...I've left it in open boxes, black bags and what not, just gets left there once they know what it is. Doesn't help we only have 1 actual scrap man round here too

I take mine to a local scrap yard - simply gave them my address, bank details years ago when that became a required thing, they have my details on file, by the time I get home, the funds have appeared in my bank account.

It gets chucked in the metals skip at both of our recycling centres. Fortunately no checks on the gate.

I did consider that, but the only stuff I chuck is <200mm length and usually 30mm section...take a while to cram 80+ litres of swarf in there

Think I'm going to bag it all up, stick some old cloths on top of the bag and then take it down, tell the gate gnome it's all rags and then when I'm in he can't really stop me...I'm going to try and actively clean the lathe down before turning any Ali in an attempt to try a bit of casting so that will cut down the amounts a bit going forward

An old steel 45 gallon barrel with the lid cut off is my go to for swarf, old wire netting and anything else that won’t strap down on the trailer. You can either weigh it in or start another one once it’s rammed full.

Too far from you but all our scrap yards around here (near Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthen and Milford Haven) you can just rock up with a driving license and bank details and they'll just weigh you in and weigh you out.

I've been down with a trailer load of swarf in a dozen builders bags and actually got a decent price as it was all aluminium swarf with no contamination so got the Ali price rather than mixed metals.

Can't you buy or make some sort of furnace, and melt it down and cast it into blocks of some sort? Then take it with the rest of your scrap.

Mixed swarf has very little value, it cant be easily recycled and any aluminum that results will be poo quality, its near impossible to get the oxide films out without electroylsis - the same process they use for ore.

My swarf goes in standard bin bag into the waste bin with the household rubbish. I'm not a business and it is household rubbish, for landfill.

@BrokenBiker when my tip started chardging for motorcycle tyres I said ok, I'll be back in a few hours. I cut them up with grinder and into black sacks, problem solved. If they ask, say household rubbish.

Once the tip people told me a car tyre was £6 to tip, they get cut up and in the bin.
