no no no...i am fully expecting to have to work on a LR, im not that naive that i think buying a LR would solve my reliability and structural issues with cars...lol

If something goes wrong on a P38 it's expensive to fix!

One of the LR mags decided to dispel the myth about how expensive to run they were and bought one, after they replaced a gearbox and front hubs complete the articles dried up and it was never heard about again

I think it's a love hate thing, with threads like this I wonder why I'm so into them but most problems end up being passed off as 'character'. I can see why some people won't touch them with a barge pole but that's fine by me because it just makes them cheaper for me to buy!

I've had my Disco 2 ES since it was 2 years old - it's a 2001 model year and it has been very reliable, but has suffered the pretty standard issues of oil in the ECU cable and ACE issues too expensive to want to fix (now removed). It's still passing MOT's but the rear chassis either side of the diesel tank is starting to go. Got it booked in to my local independent this Thursday to get it up on his ramp and do a proper appraisal and decide on an action plan. Proably involving welding and waxoyl

nah i would go with an arctic cat or a polaris if i bought a quad. infat a quad would be better than a LR but i wouldnt want a road legal quad so its only really suited to one area

I've done 5 or 6 sets of chassis legs for people now, for gods sake get decent ones, the 2mm ones are absolute gash to fit

how do manual (freewheeling) hubs work?

They disconnect the wheel from the axle so that when your in 2-wheel-drive the road only turns the wheel, rather than the road turning the wheel which turns the diff which turns the propshaft even though it's not connected to the gearbox.

It saves wear and tear on the drive train as well as a slight fuel saving, just remember to lock the hubs occasionally so you splash the oil around inside the diff, I've seen ones that haven't and the top half of the case & gears was rusty and pitted as hell.

if you want spiteful on fuel then try ragging a 3.9v8 disco. Single digit mpg isn't a laughing matter at todays prices

Used to have a 3.5v8 defender, sounded fantastic, fun to drive, and if you started ragging it you could nearly use the fuel gauge as a rev counter in reverse it dropped that fast

It pulled like a train going uphill at 50mph in 3rd with the back full of paving slabs and towing a trailer full as well, 7 ton all up weight, but well into single digit mpg territory.

We bought a Disco 2 TD5 a couple of years ago.
So far it's had it's fair share of things needing doing:
Injector loom
Fuel pressure regulator
PAS pump
PAS box
Door lock motors are all packing up in quick succession - 2 done, 2 gone, 1 still to go or has been done.
Sunroof leak - both.

Having said that, it's nice to drive and tows well which is why we bought it.

I know a bloke with an acient disco that's still going, 10 years ago it was old and he still has it

Same as his MK 4 escort van, he bought them both at 3 year old ish and filled them with waxoyl, the van used to leak on hot days

We all buy motors with well known problems, I even pretended to be surprised when the freelander overheated on the way home.....

Ours has pulled an 18t grain trailer out that the tractor struggled with. Tons of room inside. Goes anywhere, even places LR's can't, and they don't rot out like the LR's either..
