I think they can be. I had an automatic 136BHP 2.5l diesel L200 pickup and the auto was a perfect match for the engine. Very comfortable to drive, lovely and smooth.
At the other extreme, I've now got a 340BHP diesel motor with an 8 speed auto and it's again a perfect match - happily changes gear in the blink of a flea's wingbeat, but it also relaxing to drive when not caning it.

To your earlier point, I doubt I'll be getting a DPF issue any time soon

When I said a bad match I meant fuel economy wise. My mate had a Nissan Navarra which did 22mpg in gentle driving. The Discovery auto wasnt much better but the manual would do 30+.
I had a Jag XF diesel sport twin turbo. Thst had a 8spd auto. Was very nice with flappy paddles but not as sporty as a manual and I bet it would have done an extra 10mpg.
I know why they are all going auto. People would complain about the leg power needed for such a big clutch!

We've managed to invent vacuum assisted brakes and hydraulic power steering for cars, are you seriously telling me we can't invent a way to add power assistance to a car's clutch pedal ? because we've managed to invent it for wagons....

Of course it should be possible. But have you ever driven an Aston or a Ferrari with a manual box? The clutch was seriously heavy. There are very few 300bhp + cars around that have manual boxes these days sadly. I don't mind a heavy clutch and find most power steering far too light but your average driver would have a fit!

Ah yeah - good point! The L200 did 26MPG but the SQ5 does 22 (even though the spec suggests it will do 45! To its credit, I can get 38 on the average speed camera A90).

Not every vehicle has one --------some only have light when they havnt regenned to warn you to do a long run, you cant always tell, for instance I did a sprinter the other day and the only way I knew it had regened was, the exhaust temp went to about 800+ degrees on the diagnostic, coz you have to use merc star diag to regen them and I havnt got that,also they wont regen on a low fuel tank and they wont if the exhaust temp is not high enough, this one I had to blank off the complete front to cover the rad etc to get the temp up!!
If it hasnt done one in ayear I am surprised it is still running---- they only take a few weeks and they are full! when its happening the DPF literally can glow! and can set fire to the road !! I did one and it lit the tarmac so moved it onto concrete and it was making the concrete spit !

So in the interest of clean air these DPF`s gather up all the little soot`s and store them in a box under the car, when no one from vosa is watching or has a sniffer up the zorst they fly tip all the little soot`s back into the atmosphere whilst traveling at speed down a motorway . Thats progress for you

that is what pull clutches are about ...
mind you my lads evo has an aftermarket extra strong paddle pull clutch and its that heavy its not nice

And you havnt meantioned all that fuel you saved at 60mpg, you then pour down the exhaust on each of the exhaust strokes to get the sost glowing and then if you slow down below 40 mph it was all wasted and it has to start again!
as said I had one customer with an ashcan hehe that was spell check changing qashqai! quite apt so left it, her commute was just at the point when the regen cut in then she reached work , Literally took a few weeks and back again I cleaned it 4times with a power wash etc etc then I 'properly' cleaned it out!! hasnt missed a beat since.

Sadly no, my budget doesn't stretch to those types of exotic cars, my daily driver is a 23 year old pickup. I used to have an old V8 defender with a heavy clutch and that wasn't nice in stop/start traffic.

She clearly has the wrong type of engine for the driving she does then, I know far too many people who have diesels "for the economy" but they only ever do a million little journeys, yes their total mileage in a year maybe high but their engine would never manage a regen.

I know modern Volvo excavators now do a regen, the engine ecu alerts the driver when a regen is required, IIRC you can cancel it twice (in case you're in a flammable environment) but if you cancel it a 3rd time the machine shuts itself down and requires a visit from a Volvo technician before it'll run again. Perhaps diesel cars should be similar, alert the driver that a regen is about to take place and then the drivers should be blocked from turning off the engine until it has finished.

a lot of agri kit now dose the same includeing telehandlers, only time those things ever seem to get hot is bail bumping, that said mates old one must have been a dpf prototype as it sets fire to its exhaust every so often, on site it gets quiter and quiter then when you take it off site up the road it makes funny blowing noises for a bit then the exhaust starts glowing, as soon as your going downhill on the overun it blows flames an showers sparks out the exhaust

I have never owned one - I wish!
Have driven a few. An older DB9 could be a good buy though.

I did the DB5 few weeks ago and it broke down on the brake rollers !! had to do some work on it, the insurance said it aint on ours, owners liability, now they are worth about 500 / 900K a real tidy one could be over a Mill

I bought my first car in 1986. I had just passed my test and in Uni. I wrote some software and got paid 10k loads of money.
I almost bought a nice DB5 Vantage! 10k and now they are worth a flipping fortune!
I bought a Rover SD1 Vittesse instead. Awesome car especially for an 18 yr old!
