I didn't say it was when timing was brought up I told you guys what I had done and asked how it could be wrong, I'm not sure how it was wrong still but I had a helper this time rather than on my own and had time and daylight to recheck it more times than before possibly multi issue blindness.

Ok with fingers crossed I think I have sorted it out.

So it is running OK now then ?

It was timing related I think due to lack of belt tension seemed to be too slack between pump and cam

That would only make the cam timing retarded and not really cause bad starting.
UNLESS it was that slack it has jumped teeth on initial cranking,
the way I do a rough check is to hold the belt in the middle of its longest run and you should be able to turn the belt approx 90* if more it is too slack if you cant get 90* it is too tight and will make a humming sound.

Once we had got it started it has started ok but the longest bit is between the cam and pump and the whole thing is fairly close to the rad. I had pulled it on the correct way to start with and watched the tensioner take up the slack turned it over and checked tension but when we finally got it started it was rough and smoky but I had read they are like that so until yesterday I hadn't rechecked the belt. Yes it sems to be running well now.

Running fine just like before but without the water loss and flew through the MOT the other day, straight pass no advisories other than a verbal note on steering play.
