Deburring tools?

A mate showed me one of these a few days back.
seems like a great idea but his barely worked. (might have been for aluminium) he gets the benefit of the doubt as he is a bit of a genius normally.
Are they any good? can anybody reccomend one, I have just looked on fleabay, and there are loads of them.
I figure you get what you pay for so I am not after the cheapest.
BUT, will they get rid of that lovely lacerating edge you get on sheared mild steel sheet? or where you have used an angle grinder to cut strip steel.

I have put the dice away for a while, a lucky shake.

Do you mean those ones that vaguely resemble (at least in on-line photos) a crooked dental probe type of thing?
I've often wondered about those things too.

I use a Noga swivel deburring tool on turned parts but i dont like it for sheet steel ,the sheet steel deburrs which deburr top and bottom of a sheet at the same time work well with thin sheet but I've only used them with a guilotine or shear ,not cuts made with angle grinders,I use a flap disc on the grinder normally or even a file .....double burr for sheet steel ......

Good grief! How many versions.
Might have to get the dice out again.
They are what I was thinking of.
I was thinking about maybe two types.
I am thinking mainly of say 1.6m and 3mm sheet.
the photos look the ticket.
Looks like I am on the right road. They have the look of being something that is too good to be true, but a good reference from here carries some weight. looks like a case of getting what you pay for.

Just had a look around the interwebby thing. Aaarrgh to much variety.
So for doing 1 edge at a time on sheet steel what do you think?

The swivel deburrs are good for light burrs on holes and inside ends of tubes, personally I have never liked the double deburr version for sheet, they are not much use on plasma or disk cut edges, a file or flap disc is far quicker, then for a really fine finish a piece of 80 grit folded over and run along the edge, this is how I finish all of my raw edges on stainless that have to be finger friendly.

Fantastic things. Even the cheaptastic ones work ok, spending twice as much on Noga kit is better value though imo. Should be able to pick up something like the 'lb5000 universal kit' for a little over a score, the blades it comes with will work for common stuff like holes, tube and sheared sheet/plate as long as you're right handed- as with scissors an inside out/back to front version is need for cackhanders. Like Gav and Paul i typically use a grinder when i've been cutting with the, err, grinder. I bought one of the double burrs recently and kinda wish i hadn't... only really added it to take me over the carriage paid threshold, thought it'd be great but like Paul i don't

If you get one and wounder whats rattling when you use it, it's the spare tips in the handle! If when you are using it you find the tip not working to well then change it cos when the edge is dull it will only fold the burr over and not remove it. Use to use them a lot when milling say a block down all edges. m/c one face then de burr before turning and so on. Don't work to well on very rough edges (ground edge) but quicker than a file on right type of burr. Also beware of pulling to hard as some times the tip breaks at the hook.

For me the best de-burring tools are those you make yourself out of an old file ...you can grind a nice crescent edge (or whatever) on the end, exactly suiting the job in hand

I used one of the "The Double Burr NOG.DB1000" for years and its the ducks nuts, i`ve got the blades on mine set as tight as possible and will do .8-1.2mm in one sweep, 3mm takes a couple of sweeps at different angles.
It gives a lovely edge that you can carry bare handed safely and the one i have i boought 8 years ago and i`m still on the original blades

I think it was Chunko's reference to dice in the the opening post?

Interesting topic as I've just been experimenting with making flowers from petals cut freehand with the electric shear. I've been cleaning the burr off the petals with a flap disc but it’s fiddly work. I think I might be venturing £25 on one of those Double Burr tools Troppo suggested.

Cheap as chips that fellow,I remember 2 or 3 years ago were I was wanting to buy 3 stepper motors off him and he gave me a call to say that the CC didn't go through he enquired that if I buy the motor drivers from him as well he'd give me a discount of £15 well I worked it that was a bargain at that time because even shopping around in the uk wouldn't have saved me that amount.

I bought a cheap plastic one with 4 heads in the handle from ebay years ago and it is invaluable on copper pipe and hole cutter holes in aluminium but I never tried it on steel. I usually use a fibre disc on the grinder or the file for smaller jobs.

I use a Noga at work on ally but i'm not keen on using it on steel, the side of a drill bit does the job almost as well though. At home though I have a bench grinder with a wire brush on it that works really well though it can gall ally a bit if your not careful, it would be a massive time saver at work but they are too tight to buy one.

I'll second that! had my 2 23 years now-the swivel one -blades last 6/9mths,the double-i'm still on the original.

I've got set of 4 with different blades (sharpness and shapes), for differing jobs, I use them almost every day, they're great.
