Phone them and tell them to collect it and if they don't then your gonna cut it up. If they don't come it doesn't matter if it's legally yours

.GOing back to cutting, although it's ball-achingly slow, I only ever use either my jigsaw or Cengar to do the initial cuts. Once there's a decent-sized aperture(i.e. the door/flue) cut into it I'm happy to crack on with a grinder. Once I get my plasma wired up and tested I'll be using that in place of the grinder

As gas is heavier than air, unless the hole is at the bottom to let it out ....
Filling with water then attacking it with a 9 " grinder is fool proof, and simple, by the time the water has drained out the top is off anyway. The thing is, just a little flashback causes you to flinch, and then your going to get a grinder accident, ie the blade being extracted from your face, while nurses look and point at you, " giggle giggle propane cylinder giggle"
By the way I emailed Calor and they donate £5 to charity if you return stray bottles, ( though only if you ask for a form ) but you still get nothing for your trouble, they won't say why they refuse to offer a small payment and get every lost bottle back.

Many, many years ago a local shopkeeper used to store a lot of his stock in one of several very old buildings just across the road from his shop. The size of the locks on the door had to be seen to believed! What he overlooked was the bottom left hand door hinge which had rusted completely away. With the top hinge being as loose as a goose, even a fairly hefty 8 year old could pull the door open to squeeze through and pass out a couple of cases of pop bottles for returning to get the deposit on the bottles. We couldn't even drink it all and often just poured it away!
More interestingly a couple of other parts of the buildings were used as lock up garages. One older guy kept his pre-war Morgan 3-wheeler in one - with much better security, of course. I can't tell you the precise model, but it came with 2 engines! An air cooled V-twin motorbike engine that sat in front of the grille and another water cooled inline 4 that sat behind the radiator under the bonnet. I lost contact with him after the whole building complex was demolished to make way for a small array of shops.

A couple of weeks ago I cut into my first bottle.
Top off, fill with water over night. Emptied then re-filled. Stopper in the top (enough to stop water escaping but would pop out with any pressure). On its side, grinder out, cut away.
I was apprehensive but not a problem at all. And those thin discs go through so quick too!

You won't need to wash out first, as long as its full of water there's no air space for anything to ignite. Propane gas can't burn without air.
As I told some kids I found trying to light the out put from a 47 kilo bottle ! I'm guessing they weren't top of the class at school.

Propane has a flammability limit of less than %10 so it would need to need to disperse A lot first, I would imagine the flame to float about 6 feet from the bottle
. A mate said he did it once but he's full o' crap so I doubt it really happened

As sardine has said, once you have filled them then it disperses the gas so you are good to go.
I simply filled mine, left overnight, emptied and cut with the plasma cutter.

tried to cut up a oil drum for a bbq....with a 9 inch grinder ,
and it went bang big style ..
melted his shirt onto his chest, burns on his arms
and he had a few visits to a&e
the drum had exploded and split right down the middle ...scary ...

I did an oil drum years ago for a pool table light.
Same process, no problems.

I've never cut an oil drum up for fear of the above happening - but I've yet to meet anyone who has had a problem.
Far happier cutting into gas cylinders that have been filled with water, much safer!

There's a report on some health & safety website about a guy who cut into one that had a teaspoon of acetone left inside and the vapour ignited, exploded the drum and killed him. If you get one, make sure it used to contain foodstuffs or fill it to the top with water first.
