There is a fab shop in Middlesbrough with a length of oxy cylinder hanging inside the workshop. With a spring loaded plunger going through the wall. Makes a very effective and tuneful doorbell.

An artist friend of mine spotted the off-cut top of an Oxy cylinder from the sculpture that I had been commissioned to make, so he took it and now uses it as a meditation gong.... the sound does have a nice resonance.

There's also a lot of stray BOC full size (W ?) cylinders about, ive never found any idea what to do with one, they must be at least a quarter of an inch thick going by the weight.

doubleboost made some wheels for his lister trolley with one. I'm it would make an awesome wood burner or rocket burner. Are they just laying around there?

Why would it make a good wood stove ?

Wood burning needs the biggest logs you can fit in the fire box, the smaller it is the more often you need to fill it, and doubles the work of cutting and splitting the wood into little bits.

Smaller wood burns better because it has a higher surface aera.

Noo, smaller wood burns faster because it has a higher surface area, wood stoves are all about slowing the burn down to get comfortable long lasting heating.

I agree with sardine. Try a clarke potbelly stove, it's useless. You have to chop the wood into matchsticks then it roars up (because it's not properly sealed too of course) and dies half an hour later. Absolutely useless. I made one out of a W bottle top loading, so you could shove 18" logs in it.

Smaller wood has flames, so much more fun. I guess a wood burner wouldn't be great but is you split it lengthways and welded them together to make 2 trays it could be a decent BBQ.

This is the one I made. The air intakes are the fins. Air goes up the sides of the burner to get preheated. Control is by swivelling the bar at the bottom to open or close the bottom of the boxes.

Heehee. I left that there for that Indudtrial effect. I would have replaced it with a big red button and stencilled DO NOT PRESS, but couldn't find anything suitable. The owner loves it, it heats an old brick outhouse studio.

Oh yes! With a lot of effort and a bit of thought. And an 8mm thick oxy bottle rather than a calor!

I phoned BOC once about an industrial unit full of their empties, they said I should bring them to their depot for free ! Er that didn't happen.

so that shows u how interested they are about getting them returned and calor will be the same . if supermarket trolleys are found dumped they get done why not the same for calor

The hag next door called the fire brigade when she saw me tipping 'gas' down the drain from a 47kg cylinder.

Fire brigade turned up with TWO engines...

I explained that the 'gas' (clue is in the name really) was actually water that had been in the cylinder for days to make sure it was purged, and showed them the cylinder with the end cut cleanly off. They were happy enough.

Hag, evidently unhappy with lack of 'punishment', then called calor.

Calor inspector turned up. I shouldnt have really let them in without a warrent, but i did. Photographed the cylinder (which had no mention of calor on it) and went away.

I pre-empted the call, and called the local depot, to be told, aggressively, that id kill myself. I think i told them that i disagreed, and, considering the job was done, and i was talking to him, kind of made me correct.

Spouted all sorts of cr@p, so i called one level up.

Next level up said somthing about that the 'law' was in place so as people did not kill themselves, and, as it was a one off, they would collect the cylinder and that would be the end of it.

...that was the last i heard from them.


The tank turned out to be the wrong diameter for what i wanted in the end, so, given that they never turned up to pick it up, i gave it to a friend, to use as a cooling tank on his lister.


Calor are pretty grim. They have data on their own website which gives their estimated number of cylinders in circulation, and their replacement cost. From that you can work out that their "deposit" is about 2x the units cost or production. The 'deposit' expires, and they still recon they own the tank, even though they sold it for a 100% mark up the first time arround.


I know somone with a yard full of them (from demolition work) As posted above, calor also invited him to bring them in at his expense.


I understand "bottogas" are the only tanks outside of supposed ownership, as the stock was not properly bought up when bottogas went bust?

Julian, Your post just made me realise, duh ! They don't want them back cause they've already made their money out of them.They probably manufacture so many the cost of new ones is less than driving about collecting strays.

I'm wondering if you contacted Calor to come and collect, and they didn't you would legally own the bottle ?
