2.5D is different features on different Z heights that are mostly 2D profiles.

3D is full 3 axis interpolation (i.e. 3 axis constantly moving together). This requires a number of passes and very long/fine finishing passes.

Bottom line: full 3D takes a lot of machining compared to 2.5D.

Ellipses suggests you want a response. Just offering another avenue in case OP doesn't get what he requires elsewhere... also, this isn't 1993, NY CNC for example, after all do a lot on YouTube, but have a machine shop that many would dream of.

The point is YouTube operators tend not to charge as they are grateful for the content to keep viewers and subscribers happy.

The flip side is: if you want a small run of complex machined steel parts be prepared to pay accordingly.

May be worth a quick chat.

I will run the part on my Haas mini mill - there may be a need to have the ends turned on lathe for final dimensions. I can machine each side - critical dimensions need to be confirmed

Trouble is most shops aren’t interested in one off for pocket money when theres £100k of finance

couldnt agree more, its not a complicated job just bloody time consuming as in will exceed customers budget

having looked at the drawing id do most of it on the lathe,

Dad had an engineering workshop until he retired.

All the folk were old school, they mostly struggled with cnc stuff as they didn’t know or understand programming

They would take this job on as manual ops

The pita is the hardening operation as parts swell and need post machining to return to tolerance. If its just the ends that need to be to fit hard turning or better tickling on cylindrical grinder

Looking at the insert I recently made for the Panther gearbox repair, First photo is all 2 and 2,5D. Front of second photo where the shape changes as it goes away from you is full 3D.
