With the missing spring, it does fire and then dies which is no doubt to do with the mixture adjustment. However I have no idea of its intended position and can't tune it in situ because access is obstructed by the exhaust assembly.

I'd be pulling apart a cheap click type bio and finding the cartridge return spring for a bit of fettling....

I have the updated throttle link on order, so not so concerned about that. I am just baffled about how I adjust the fuel mixture when I can't access it.

Did you note how many turns out on the adjustment screw when you removed it?
If you did, preset it back to that before install.
(If you didn't note the settings try 1.5 turns out from fully seated - it's a pretty common setting - and a plug electrode check for colour after a period of running should let you know if it's ok)

I didn't as I thought it was a jet.

I have a similar carburettor body now, which I have installed. Sadly I can't even get it to fire, fuel and spark present so I'm not sure what is going on. I will investigate further when my arm isn't so sore from pulling!

Give it a good whiff of brake cleaner up the air intake before you give it another few pulls - see if it fires?
It might give you a couple of clues to follow?
(Also technique.... pull the starter rope slowly out till its on compression first, let the rope back home, then a good whiff, and then a long steady, strong pull, not a snatch).

Yes, it fires and runs briefly on brake cleaner. Same symptoms as the old carburettor, so have ordered a replacement fuel pump and plug at great expense.

Unable to add photos or anything.

Find small child with bicycle with single gear with chain.

Steal the complete cog, (needs more work), weld old 3/8” extension bar to inner core.

Outer, use some old bolts welded to the teeth to make what looks like mini axle stand. To other half of the extension bar.

Attach to dugga dugga, when engine starts the clutch in gear thinks it’s cycling down hill.

Remove and enjoy

With the new fuel pump it started and runs. However the speed varies as it misfires and the electronics stamps on the throttle to keep it running, so it seems to be hunting. I then fitted and modified the new IG2000 spec carburettor as well as a new spark plug. It is just the same sadly so I have put it back together whilst I ponder on it further. It may be a slightly larger main jet, but not enough to make it misfire I wouldn't have thought. The original jet is not removable as its slots are chewed, so can't even do a substitution test.

It worked fine before it was laid up, it has a new fuel pump, new carburettor, new plug and fresh fuel. I can't think what else could be up with it, no response from spraying brake cleaner around, so no air leaks.

I have bought a Chinese 2kW generator to tide me over, but I would like to get to the bottom of it.

These wee engines are a PITA once they start this malarkey.
I'd be surprised indeed if its the electronics affecting it & making it hunt - it'll be the mechanical governor acting on the carb butterfly etc.

My money is still on fuelling on the pilot / low load/ idle side, not the main jet. (Worth checking the float height & flow in to eliminate starvation also?)

You can often Test this by using the choke. Put the choke on a bit at a time even though it's warm & see if it stabilises. If you can get it to run, pretty stable, you can try applying a resistive load of around 500 watts. You might find it'll run & sustainable the load quite stable with maybe up to 50% choke on.... you might even be able to ease the choke off once it's running under load (though it might sputter/surge a bit, and if you remove load it might again hunt wildly).
If you get results on choke, that suggests fuel supply into carb from fliat bowl is OK (float height etc) but you still have some kind of flow issue on the dinky galleries under light running (likely to be gack in the old carb, and maybe just poor finishing on the clone carb)
