Plan 'A' is to use the drill press in the manner in which it was designed.

There is a good reason that J2 stops at 10mm capacity: because that is the capacity (torque) a taper of that size/dimensions can handle without popping loose.

I cannot find a 30mm 1/4" drive impact socket for a similar reason.

^ this is a good logical point, I've gone to a 13mm JT2 from 8mm capacity, I had not considered that it may have been an intended limitation.
Not had problems so far but have not pushed it that much - will keep my eye on it!

and save yourself the worry. I don't usually recommend RDG stuff as it really is "down to a price" but these drill chucks seem to be of excellent quality for the money.

I've got 3 of them. 2 M2's and 1 MT3. Ok but not always supplied properly lubricated and can jam. Dismantled and moly greased and are OK.

That's a Morse taper sleeve, that one goes into a 4MT hole and the inner taper is 3MT.

Jacobs make a 13mm capacity JT2 which would suggest that is the maximum.

The torque will depend on material being drilled. Non ferrous is generally drilled at a much higher RPM so will need to transmit only a fraction of the torque through the taper. In many situations there is nothing wrong with a bigger capacity.

However if the machine is that old I would probably sell it to somone prepared to pay the premium and find one more suitable.

Many thanks for the replies. Before I bought the Delta, I was using a cheap and cheerful Chinese drill, which has a lot of run out. I was planning to sell it, but it does have a big chuck and I think I'll probably hang on to it now. The Delta is a much nicer drill to use generally, and is in good condition, as is the chuck. However, the Chinese drill will get me out of trouble when I need big holes. Guess I can live with keyed chucks.

They seem to be the one and only manufacturer that does so. Like you say, perhaps it is for a more limited application like non-ferrous. For a general purpose drill press, it is probably better to go with the flow and fit a 10mm capacity chuck. That way, you will not be tempted to abuse it with holesaws or blacksmith's (Silver and Deming) bits.

I'm pretty sure I have a key here.

I'm not saying that specific one, but more as an example. They seem to be around the £25-30 mark inc.

Which is fine, so long as it works - I asked a while back in this thread if chucks just worked or if they could have hidden issues. I mean, of course they could have hidden issues, but, in general?

Depends on the accuracy which you want, some of the jaws can be worn affecting the grip / accuracy, maybe slightly bent of they have been abused, but you really want to see the end of the chuck with the jaws closed to ascertain that - two jaws will be close together and one will be slightly away from the others. The scrolls can be sticky if they have been abused and the key will sometimes slip if the locating hole or teeth are worn.

For the one you quote, look at the lines going round the arbor, has it spun and been cleaned up with Emery? The teeth on the chuck body are worn a little.

TBH for the price difference I would buy the new one and arbor from Zorro.

I use a keyed Jacobs similar in my TS.

It might be an error in the thumbnail, but the pictures/descriptions of the two eBay items are not of compatible items. The chuck is a 34-06, meaning it has a JT6 in it. The arbour is JT33 which will not fit.

You are quite right, it was an error in my linking. This is the one I should have put, it is the cheaper option.
