Have you a clamp meter? knowing what amps it's pulling will give you a rough idea of hp

Had some time to mess about with it this morning. The motor wouldn’t start it again, just slow cranking not fast enough for the centrifugal switch to kick in. It was drawing 29a while slow cranking.

Let the belt off to get it going and it draws a steady 3.6 amps while running with no cutting. Doing a heavy cut on steel it draws 4 amps.

Measured voltage was 242v so 968w so I’d say a 1hp motor allowing for a bit of inefficiency?

I’ve done the pull thing that @Seadog mentioned and it pulls 1lb on an innacurate scale, not done the calc yet. Edit clac done 1.96lb so within spec.

Cleaned quite a lot of grease out and it seems to be running better. I ran it for 15mins at approx 900rpm and the casting was mildly warm. Which ties in with what the manual says.

Bearings cleaned up.

Non that are really suitable. An old 250w 3 phase that I’m currently fitting to my mill, a half horsepower clarke single phase lightweight thing and a 370w single phase chinese effort. I suppose I could lash on the clarke one just to try it but I don’t think it’d even turn it.

As above and graphite ( CV joint ) grease for the bearings.
I had couldn't find 1.5hp motors so have 2hp 3 phase motors via vfd's on both boxfords.

You can't put CV grease in there.

You need a spindle grease.

These are timken taper rollers, not constant velocity joints in a rubber boot.

CV joint grease is typically Molybdenum grease, not graphite. Regardless both are pretty rubbish for rotating bearings, as their main application is for sliding joints.

Apologies for my input. I have used cv grease for most greasing applications for donkeys without any problems, but I do stand corrected as I see I should be using bearing grease on boxford bearings.

FYI std BUD motor was 550W three phase.

Managed to get in the workshop this morning. Bit if a follow up… started up the lathe and it started well and straight up to speed.

Looks like the grease was the issue.

A future project will be to put a 3 phase motor and VFD on there but for now it will be ok.
