The motor on my boxford CSB has always struggled driving the lathe but it does work, just feels a little under powered.
Once it has warmed up a bit and you stop and restart it the motor needs a little help with a hand on the chuck (yeah I know!) to get it spinning. You can feel this with your hand when the lathe is out of gear, it’s difficult to turn then once turned a degree or two it moves freely, like something is sticking then frees off.
Suspected the grease so I’ve had the bearing covers off today. Would you say they’re over greased?
The grease is still wet and isn’t dried (which I suspected).
The spindle/bearings get warm quite quickly but not hot, just warm.
I haven’t done anything to the preload yet and would rather not if being honest.
Front bearing. I have wiped a bit off here.
Rear bearing
This is the grease I’ve been using but it hasn’t had any in for a long time, I was generous with it when I first got it putting in quite a lot, maybe too much.
