So as some of you have noticed, the BOC bottles are different, they have higher pressure. Their hobby deal is for size Y bottles which contain 5 cu.m of gas, the SGS bottles are 30l @ 200 bar so contain 6 cu.m. So I just added 20% to the BOC prices to make it a fair comparison. Still shows BOC works out better if you use more than two bottles per year.

Just got a quote from Air Liquide as well (BOC like company). £11.50/month rental, didn't get cost of bottles. They do rent free as well, but they are some fancy bottles called "ALBee" costing £200 inc vat deposit and £75incVat for each fill but they are only 13 litre bottles so not really suitable for amateurs.
Those ALBee bottles aren't a deposit system, you actually buy the right to the bottle so it's yours to keep.
There are many factors in choosing a supplier and you have to go with what suits your circumstances. If you are using loads then BOC is the way, if you have a bottle that may sit there for 2 years then rent free is a good option. The one thing many forget about the deposit v rent thing, the deposit isn't dead money you will get most of it back when/if you had the bottle back.You will not get you rent back. It's very easy with BOC to find yourself 5-10 years down the line and paying on a cylinder that you use rarely. As a home user it often helps if you can get gas at weekends. I have a Hobby Weld cylinder on my mig as the local tractor parts place stock them and are open 6 days a week in addition to that there is petrol station 25min away that is open 7 days 0600-2200 that stock them. The other benefit with a deposit system is you can pick up a spare bottle if yours is nearly empty then take the empty back and get your deposit back. I know we can all argue that a job can wait but if you have a busy job and the only time you get to play is evenings and weekends then access to gas on a Sunday is useful.

Yes it's a monthly contract that they bill yearly. So if you canx half way through the year you get the remaining months back.
I got an ALBee bottle this week, its quite a slick connection / on/off switch & reg.
Can't say I'm too impressed with the refill network, least not for where I live...

I just popped into my local SGS dealer who quoted me £192 for a 20 litre bottle of argon/co2 mix. I asked how much a refill was and he pointed out they don’t do refills, you have to surrender your bottle, get a new one, pay another £192. But you get £100 back for your bottle.
“So, £92 for a refill, basicall?y” I asked him.
“No, we don’t refill it” he tells me.......
Eventually I did manage to get through to him that I was asking how much it costs me whenever I need more gas: £92
That sounds pretty steep for 20 a litre bottle.
Off to see BOC next.

I called the general number, got a call back ten minutes later, guy called Mark Wilcox, I mentioned the word ‘Volkzone’ and he was most enthusiastic.
I opened an account on line, he gave me the price for rent: £56.40 a year, but refill price I forget now, £30 maybe, fairly cheap. That is for Y sized bottle, 39 litres I think?
But a hell of a lot cheaper than the local auto supply wanted. £192 just to get a 20 litre bottle home.

I went with BOC after speaking to nearest SGS agent and then very informative chat with BOC. BOC do a 'hobby' type account now; I got the impression that the Volkszone deal was the precursor to it - it is limited to certain gasses and cylinder size.
Just looked at invoice; £43.80 incl. VAT for 'Y' size Argoshield Light and £56.40 incl. VAT for rental for the year.

Those O/A prices are good to know they have been added, before moving the Argon & Argoshield over to the Volkzone deal I was paying over £400 a year on rental with the O/A.
