Black and Decker workmates

So black and decker today IMHO are just rubbish, Stanley as well they're just good to make utility knives and tool boxes/chest

Just to nerd out here - but even the utility knives have gone down hill.
Just take a look at the difference between the original 99 and early 99E with the proper spring locking mechanism and the new 99E where its just a bit of anaemic springy steel. Doesn't feel anywhere near as positive or smooth to use.

We had a few at Men in sheds.
They are not as sturdy as The B&D workmates, the clamps are good.
Just work a bit odd.

I bought a "Lumberjack" bench for one of my sons a few years back, Very useful versatile piece of kit, Got it at the Harrogate woodworking show with a big discount at the end of the three day show, Always the best time to haggle as they want the sales figures up, And one less item to get packed back into the van,

I bought one of those mitre saw stands when they were selling them off cheap from Aldi and bolted a piece of worktop on top. It makes a fairly sturdy fold down workbench.

I had an original 70's Workmate, it was good quality and well designed. Sadly the 1mm thick pressed steel rusted through after a few weeks being left outside in the boatyard. Now I just improvise any needed outdoor workbenches, using cheap Screwfix plastic folding trestles, scaffolding planks and G-clamps.

I reckon you’re better off with those folding stands @eLuSiVeMiTe uses. I’ve ordered 2 after I saw his post but not here yet.

Hmm, sensing a sales opportunity here, I've got a couple of old ones @fizzy prime for refurbishment.

Very rarely use them and are sat outside most of the time... Pallet forks on the JCB or 6x6 bed usually more useful

How do you grip something like and electric scooter with that?
Or hold anything? Does it have some sort of vice built in?

Theyre probably usable as is just a bit stuff and the wood will need replacing at some point.

In the 70s before the interweb was invented and workmates were a new thing, I bought one of the original cast type.

Two of the special screws fell out and were lost the first day.

I phoned them, and was told I had to take it, or send it at my own expense, to their service centre 60 odd miles away.

I told them I had tightened the screws a couple of times before they disappeared and was then told the guarantee was now void as I had tampered with it!

A very angry exchange followed resulting in 2 screws arriving in a jiffy bag about a week later, no apology, nothing...

Bought some Loctite but ever bought B & D again.

Things are a bit different now thank goodness.

I have a few clamp on vice If i need em. The top I use is MFT style so can use f clamps through slots.
I have one of these in the van for workholding
