Belt Linisher/ Sander

I got offered 2 washing machine motors today, i denied as i though they wouldnt be powerful enough

i have one on a 10" squirrel cage fan here, as there is no id on it i cant say what kw it is but they would all be about the same id imagine.
this one here i get the impression its enough for it, which isnt a lot really.

Picked it up tonight, 4 hour round trip.

1/4hp motor. belt is 4" wide, Not sure on the size though. All i can read on the belt is "P36"

Had a little play earlier. Can stall the belt if i put quite a bit of pressure on it, at which point the belt just slips. Cant seem to stall the Motor!

Well happy with it though. Had some 304 stainless 60mm tube offcuts. Had previously cut with an angle grinder, 1mm disc.

Nice, true and square. Only took about 30 seconds. Happy with that.

I have the 4inch x36 sander with 1/4 hp motor . it works ok but realy needs a half hp motor on it . I have one on my 6 inch belt sander which I may put on the 4 inch and put a 3.4 on the 6inch one

Well it works i thought it would. It certainly needs some more Torque and RPM.

Any recomendations on a Motor?

Its also a 4x36 as you suggested, Any recommendation on belts. Will be using it for most metals.

The Linisher, £26 off ebay, The stand i built was from some 1" stock i had in the pile.

Lovely job Giz.
Make yourself a little removable guard to go round those pulleys in case you have a moment of madness. Have you slotted the motor plate for adjustment and removal of the belt.

New belt on, some nice tension now. I now manage to stall the motor. More RPM and torque needed.

Have ordered some Zirconia belts.

I *think* i have the same unit at home.

Mine is very heath-robbinson though - motor held on an old gate hinge, tensioned with a cut and tied bike tyre.

The motor on mine isnt that large either, so ill keep an eye on what you get up to with it.

In all honesty you've done a lovely job on making it look the biz but it doesn't surprise me you can stall that motor. It's a little sander and your putting a lot of pressure on it pressing hard metal tubing on the belt to square them up. You've got a nice little thing going but your products will not progress on the quality front without a little injection. A sander like that is for whipping off the burs not altering the angle of a badly cut part. You should be looking at sorting the problem before it gets to that stage by investing in a second hand saw. One that you can fettle to cut true. I know you do this part time but I can tell from when I met you it's something your passionate about. As its a part time thing use the cash Profit created from these jobs To put back into it with the correct equip needed to make it pay easier. I had the exact same issue a chopsaw no good for any tolerance so to perfect my quality I took on a bandsaw project. Never looked back.

I'm sure this will work as intended. It just needs a little upgrade. Single phase 1hp motor should do the trick, aswell as some proper belts designed to be used with metals. Its just finding a motor for not much money.

Bandsaw is great, and it is on my list. Going for under £100 locally. Its just having the space to store a tool of that size.

I guess, in the context of the above, i should mention what mine gets used for -

removing the remains of bridges on aluminum parts, when they come off the cnc machine.

ie, nothing but cleaning up edges

Ive had the machine for some years. It was given to me, as its owner got a larger machine (they were a woodworker).
It does the job i want it to, but i think material removal in any quantity would be tough for it.

Mine removes material. faster than i had imagined. I expect a bigger motor and some proper belts will see me through

Have a look at home made belt grinders as used for knife bevel grinding.
They use a 50mm (?) belt and can be made in a weekend from scrap - although that depends upon your scrap pile.
Ive made a couple - skateboard wheels, belt sander drums and breadcrate trolley casters are all good sources for idler wheels.
A flat pulley driven from a 1hp (3hp better) motor drives the belt.
Because its only 2in wide belt, it only needs half the motor rating of a linisher.
Belts are usually, in my experience, 48" long in the uk.
US ones are 72"

the thing I like most is that the contact platen can be exchanged for various radii wheels - or a pair of wheels without a platen between - so that flat, concave, or convex shapes can be ground
