I read this as your having 'left-over' from previous changes? How often do you change your oils? I do mine with filter at least twice as often as BMW's service indicator says [sometimes even more often, and I know some will 'poo-poo' that but it keeps me happy and gives me peace of mind ] because of low annual mileage and sometimes short trips. I use Home Bargains Viscol which is c £14 per 4.5 ltrs and conforms to LL0-4 which is what BMW specify.

You should use VW507 on diesel VAG vehicles I.e. Skoda, VW etc.

As a Euro 5/6 Diesel vehicle will have a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter on the exhaust). Using the wrong grade can cause issues with the DPF failing.

For the cost saving I know what I would do!

That is one of my main concerns. Knowing how easily these things block up and with EGR ect pumping crap back into the combustion cycle I don't want to risk it.

Just use the correct grade/spec then its one less worry!

if you are going to worry about it just buy some more oil prob only £20 quid and you will have a little left over if you put the differant oil in and it goes bang you will be kicking your self even if it was not the oil to blame

In 50 years in working in the motor/plant trades, I've never known the workshop to have several different grades of engine oil for various models of engine. Usually there's a barrel or bulk oil tank that every engine get filled from, I've also never known an engine blow up because of the oil grade, lack of, no oil, or lack of servicing, yes, but not the grade of engine oil.

I've known vehicle owners to supply their own choice of oil for a service, because the workshop cant supply the oil grade spec's.

Generally the workshop orders oil in bulk, from the buying/head office who will buy the best bulk deal available, which can involve an oil manufacturer/supplier changing even possibly the oil grade range/spec slightly.

Easiest way to start an argument is to get everyone going on oil brands/grades

I put 10/40 in everything, buy it in unbranded barrels and use it in all the lorry`s,vans , 4X4`s, plant and machinery without issues. The same applies to gear oil, universal transmission fluid, hydraulic and UTO.

Its all in black barrels

As long as the oils are of a good spec they don't need to be branded, black barrels are OK with me, no different from a 1000ltr plastic box or a bulk delivery from a tanker...

Petronas C3 full synthetic 5 / 30
This will do 90 % of modern engines
We always check the manufacturer's speck
Any special oil is just brought in as required
In my car, I run "Royal Purple" oil of the correct speck

It’s not a modern engine but it’s my work van so i’d rather not risk it for a few quid difference

John according to my insurance renewal letter I am running nineteen vehicles, keeping track of the oil requirements and ensuring my guys are topping up with the supposed correct grade would be a nightmare so for me its a one fits all solution whether right or wrong. Some of the older 4x4`s are getting close to the 300k mark, two have gone well over that and the old Foden artic is north of 1.6 million miles, one of the tractors is now on 15,000 hours. All running on the same jollop , I do understand those that want to use oem recommended though

No offense but I don't reckon comparing a fleet of older industrial/agricultural machinery to modern, small, lightweight cars is really fair.

I also have a 45gal drum that has a decent one size fits all engine oil for tractors, simple petrol engines and the like.

It doesn't get used in the decent road cars though, they have what is specced. Or better.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe not but the actual cost of buying fully synthetic correct grade for the two "modern" cars I service is not Megabucks compered to the general costs of running a car.

I've bought the correct stuff as it's not worth the risk to me on a 15 grand modern car.
I service our vehicles more often than the recommendations but I don't know enough on the subject of oils to save 32 quid.

There is nothing wrong with the decision ( as against a dodgy knock on ) at the end of the day its your engine and your money, we all make our way through life.

I tend to buy the cheapest 'correct' oil and change it often.

Im a big fan of the agi universal oils, one size fits all, saves the wrong stuff getting put in the wrong hole.

But on the two newish pickups we have they get the correct stuff, though not nescessarily the right make, for warrenty purposes.

But as said, any oil is better than no oil, except if your unlucky enough to get the mineral / synthetic mix wrong and get jelly.

Company I work for has an account with them so I get a discount anyway
