When I was looking round at Berlingos I saw one that was on 450,000 miles on original engine and clutch. I didn't look if it had full service history though..

Don't know where they get the apprentices from these days, they seem a bit young to me.....

after 5/8000 mls most oil is the same spec anyway, and full of carbon, we did tests on oils at regular changes, as we were part of the oil company's development tests and oils would change grade surprisingly quickly, in 5000 of delivery work a 5/40 had changed to a straight 80 !! that happened on several occasions, so that made me realise that this long service mls ------some are 20,000!! are complete hype !!
BUT I must say not using the low ash oil can effect dpfs on vehicles and have seen quite an amount of wear on VW pd engines--- cam gear, mine has 200k on it and uses fully syn but changed quite often but how much wear is brought about by using oil that has done 10/12k on short runs etc ?? we will never know.
Most wear takes place at start up for first 10 secs anyway.
And many starting problems are down to thickened carbon ladend oils.

extended service intervals are just in place to attract the fleet car buyers accountants. if your racking up the miles your car is off the road getting serviced every other month on a normal service plan. but most company cars only stick around for 3 years so why would they care if its knackered after 5 years.

The engines themselves cause little to no problems, I can’t think of a single failure that was attributed to a lack of lubrication. What kills the odd one off here is cooling issues like a rad going down or a waterpump failure when driven by the sort of guys that never glance down at the gauges, get through tons of clutches a brake parts but very little in way of main mechanical components. Careful drivers do get a lot further down the road than the teararses, one old boy I had on kept a 90 defender running without anything other than service items for just under 400k, not even a clutch , a stark contrast to one lad that did two clutches in a month trying to back a trailer up a steep drive in high range without putting the reverse lock in on the hitch. A few months later the same guy was moaning about the Landy only doing 35mph and told my fitter it needed a fuel filter, this went on for about a month so after a couple of filter changes our fitter took it for a spin. He only got as far as the gate when he came straight back, the numpty had be in low range for all that time screaming the granny out of it.

I do sprinters and their service interval is 20 000 mls ish !! according to merc.

Were those tests you did on mineral, semi synthetic or fully synthetic? As I understand it, fully synthetic oils are more stable and tend to degrade less.
Completely agree though, service intervals based on a set mileage are silly anyway. With the on board computer capabilities of even 10yr old cars, the service interval ought to be dynamic, based on things like time driven while not up to temp and number of startups.
The mechanically sensitive portion of the world (i.e the demographic of this forum!) Probably adjust servicing to accommodate for how and engine is used but most people just wait until the spanner lights up
