Sorry, my garage is 1 mile away and i quicky tried the gas at 10 setting 3 on the weld pics number 1 and 4, the others 1mm ones are from the 140 amp i had. number 6 is the 4mm at the back and number 5 is the back of welding 1mm sheet steel. 2 n 3 are from the 140 amp a week ago. I know my welds coming now are not good but there is some good bits in the mess lol.

you could do with backing off the wire speed a little the welds look tall rather then penatrating
experiment with the wire speed turning the wire speed down will give you better penetration if it is too high

Ok i will experiment more with the wire speed. I did try number 2 an 3 but the welds are rubbish and no penetration, maybe between 4 and 5 would be better, i had it below number 6 BTW.

looking at those last pics the wire just isnt getting chance to melt properly it just apears to be sitting on the top

I have just noticed that i missed some of the edge of the metal on the first pic post two, i do find it hard to see with the face mask on but needs must as they say. I also find it harder being in a difficlu postion, neeling on the floor doing welds is much easier to get the hang of it, i will practice more.
When i was welding the last pics i did get a weld pool on some bits then other areas was harder, this is where getting the technique just right in hard to reach places, i just dont have much time because i have quite a bit of welding to do before it goes back to the hire shop. I have hit the areas with a hammer to see if its strong enough and it seems fine probably due to some of the welds being good enough i think.

Note, A weld from the thick metal to the thin metal is going to create a stress riser that will cause it to fail early. Remember the weld itself will create a hardening and a lack of toughness in the thin steel of the strut turret.
Consider just welding a strut between the two bolted strut turrent plates or making the plate tapered at a shallow angle to the edges so that the edge is similar thickness to metal underneath. The tapering will make it easier to weld and the total structure tougher.

How long is the extension lead? What size cable? Are you fully uncoiling it?
Welders are very particular about power requirements, any voltage drop will drastically reduce the output.
Pilot error is the main problem here, lack of experience and poor technique. I'd almost guarantee the machine isn't at fault.
Could you upload photos to the forum server and not use photobucket please?

Ok thanks for the photo tip, i was unsure how to put photos from my computer onto, the url link page so i thought photobucket is a good enough url to use.
I am going to practice in the next hour or so and thanks to Snooper pm'ing me advice about getting the right settings from my machine type for 1mm now then i will practice on the thicker stuff once that 1mm has been better mastered, here's hoping eh.

Here a few pics if my recent welds after more practice. I hope the pics are loaded. I have found that the welder has an even higher power setting, it has what looks like a set of stairs and i managed to weld thicker steel on the cars body no problem. Im not sure why it has that pic next to the last part of the dial, i did not think it had another setting cause the rest are numbers, this last one does not

I think it works fine now, i have added five more pics and more to come.
I know the welds are a bit high on some and not the best looking but they have penetrated very well.

The last pic on the previous post have two on the far right hand side, they have penetrated very well and look flat im just not sure i can get them better looking. I seem to be able to butt weld better then a weld on a single sheet of steel, look at the far top lft join, it looks a good enough one to me, well at least the bottom half of the weldline does.

Last pic, two on the right were made with no shielding at all by the look of it.
Several of the others in the second to last photo haven't fused to both edges, the welds are just sat on the edge of one piece and the middle pic looks like you've missed the edge completely as there's an awful lot of gaps.
The one you said you were happiest with is a lap weld, not a butt.
Better than the earlier attempts but not much.

The penetration pics are after the other side welds, thay dont all look great but at least there is penetration and with thet new higher power setting i should be able to weld the 6mm plates with practice. what are peoples opinions about my efforts ?

Number 2 wire feed is not that much better but three and four were the ones i did this welding with. I set the butt weld setting to around 5 wire and 4 power, the single weld line at wire 4 and power number 3.
Does the last power setting starirs pic the Auto setting where wire feed is set auto ?

Gas was fine set at 10 and was better than the old pics cause i could see the gas sheild cloud, the thing is they have all penetrated very well and i have wacked the steel loads yet its solid, the servo plate looks like it ant hit both steels but the penetration is also very good.
So if i left these as they are what would happen to them after time, not bothered what they look like cause they will be greound down with a flap disk like the pic with two plates welded pic and covered with sealant after i have used Bilt Hamper hydrate 80 that can go on clean steel. ?
I found doing it in the tight space more difficult.
