The couple who moved in next door to me a year ago spent two months with builders in. Every morning 6 days a week, heavy banging, drilling, chiseling etc. They basically turned the garage into part of the house, knocked a door through to it, raised the floor up, all new plaster, complete new heating system etc. I changed my bedtime so I woke up an hour earlier, before the hammering started.

whilst i dont mind the work being done as we was doing the same nest door

what i didnt like was being woken up at 11pm -12 pm by a pub git that did work after the pub i was in my school years at the time

i got revenge back as when there daughter was going to school i put the music on loud with the bass as i like it oh they come round moaning that there child couldnt get to sleep because of it and this is at 9pm -10pm there child was normally in the garden at that time of night

they got told to do one as they didnt think about it when i was going to school, then i got the bollocking for playing the music so loud

I know a man that lived in a neighbourhood controlled by a residents committee and he was targeted by them for just being an average person, so for fun he used to buy old tatty cars that were still taxed and had a MOT and would leave them parked around the area, it took months to get them moved.

In Ireland, there's a significant annual road tax reduction for a light commercial vehicle.
Of course, chancers were importing Land Cruisers and Crewcabs, running around with their families in on personal business and paying €250 p.a. instead of the €800-odd they should have been paying for an engine / car that size.
That went on for years, until about ten years ago the Govt cracked down on it. Much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth from the chancers.

OK bits of old reekie are like any other city but and the tourist area's are being swamped by tacky tartan but a wander through the old town or new town and see the real Edinburgh. The pink lady was extremely fortunate to inherit a new town apartment they are fantastic expensive buildings but somewhere I'll never be able to afford unfortunately.
Also thought the whole area was listed or a heritage site or some such hence no pink door.

Fair enough I'm miles away but enjoy the odd day visiting my daughter or just exploring.

I did, it was eye catching but not really out of place.

The silly thing is, that the Georgian era loved bright colours.
Some of the brightest colours for dyes, still in use now, were created then.
e.g. Chrome Yellow
(Edinburgh New Town is from the Georgian era for those that aren't aware).

for start off georgian paint was not really around it was within canvas painting

if anything all of that wood was stained but using different hardwood would change the colours of the doors

its only 1900-1950s did outside paint exist however dyes did exist with lime as you find waterproof coloured lime via the romans

as goes for those that want to do what they want with heritage property if you dont like the rules then dont buy them dont buy them

Talks about paint from early 1700's. That wood was often cheap, so was painted so it was consistent.

if you want to know more about doors of that time look at old churches doors

they was thick doors not like they are now

paint colours was often with oil paintings the old oil paints of the time used with tapestry paintings

doors was of thick oak or with a hardwood type whilst many homes had the style of barn doors that includes churches

what you will find with the old oil paintings of houses they was a brown stained colour

not on heritage listed building .a guy in middlesbro ownes a stack of street houses that are rented out to imigrants all his propertys have red doors .so the imigrants complained and councill wanted them to be all painted diffrent colours they were allways ok till they moved in

No wonder they were chancing their arm! The government make people become chancers by dreaming up stupid taxes and silly amounts they want people to pay.

Covenants are not worth anything if there's no-one to enforce them.

Yes I had this when I sold my old house last year. 7 covenants, one was 'no clay kilns' or something like that. They were put in place when the land was sold for building plots to make sure that they were just residences and nothing else because at the time they were posh houses for Thames merchant traders. Another covenant was no outbuildings but the whole street is now full of garden sheds, workshops, garden gyms even a granny annexe. I had 2 sheds and a 'hobby workshop'.My solicitor said that there would have to be someone with an interest to enforce the covenant (from 1905) and they would have to know about it (unlilely) and care enough to do something and even then if the workshop had been there 20 years un- challenged they would likely lose the right to enforce the covenant anyway.

Covenants can still cause problems in conveyancing, if a lender is involved they can insist in an indemnity insurance, that said it’s normally a small one off payment. Had them on the last place I sold and the one off payment was about 2k.

I think I just paid about £150 chancel insurance. The odds on it ever being required are pretty remote but the penalty for not having it doesn't bear thinking about.

I was under the impression that they were done away with after I paid mine, around 2018.
