If you like boating every now and then, go rent one, then, when it goes wrong, you've someone to phone, and it's not cheap, but you can pick and where you go.

A few years back I met the (now late) Oliver Winterbottom who, as well as designing the Lotus Elite, TVR Tasmin and assorted other cars, also had a lot of input on boats built by the (also late) Colin Chapman of Lotus... Moonrakers (JCL Marine once Chapman acquired them).
I don't know if many (any?) of them survive but one of their other boats (Mamba) is at the bottom of Lake Geneva owing to running an interesting cocktail of petrol for the engines and gas for the cooking. Fine unless both vapours mix and ignite.

We do this occasionally in the Greek Islands, but its not proper real sailing. No cold wet NorthSea spray, no rain running down your neck……nah its just not propa!
There is something deeper about boat ownership than just the use of the boat, hard to define, but it has that “something”.
A friend of mine bought a boat blind for a song some years ago a steel dutch barge. His wife (who isnt marinised) asked "How long is it?" He replied "38", She assumed 38ft so wasnt too miffed. Actually it was 38 meters.
Still after a years hard graft he sold it for a humungous profit so she was happy.

Actually, I got myself a bit confused there, the speed limit of 12 Knots is between Wandsworth Bridge and Margaretness (just east of London City Airport), it's downstream of here that there is technically no speed limit.
In the opposite direction, it drops to 8 knots west (upstream) of Wandsworth Bridge.

You're spot on, one of the last Crossfields boats and one of very few to be fitted with a motor since new. Built 1932 so not quite at the end of her working life yet I'd hope! I think I know the fella you're talking about, but he didn't own her as far as I remember.
You're correct, a number of the planks had been replaced, but unfortunately they very quickly sprung out and turned what looked like a nice simple recaulking job into something rather more involved.
My parents moved to Crag foot near Silverdale 35 years ago, At that time Crossfields yard at Arnside came up for sale. Dad & i tried to buy the place. We missed it by one day. The guy that bought it never really used it & tried many times to get planning permission for housing on the site getting knocked back every time. Its still empty & derelict to this day. A bloody travesty.
If she was built in 1932 & Iron spike fastened she will be getting to the point of probably having been respiked at least once maybe more, trouble is each time its done its more holes in the planks & frames with old spikes next door to them. The frames lose their ability to hold the spikes.
Then its reframe & replank time. In short a total rebuild. Very very rare to find a copper fastened boat of any working type. Iron fastened working boats had a working lifespan of 50 years or so after that they get on borrowed time.
Some of the old cockle dredgers i worked on in the 80's were so worn out it was only big pumps that kept them afloat!

That's got to be one of the ugliest planes I've seen.
While slower, I always thought the Rockwell Shrike (aero commander) would be a good dirt strip plane.
