Are boats really worth so little these days?

here, if ur not in some tourist hot spot mooring is free.......provided it not over 35ft......
smaller stuff on trailers....free ramps for loading etc..... free parking for car's with b/trailers......

there's a blue water twin mast boat sunk in a local harbour, the guy was found dead in susp circumstance....free to collect but the cost of salavge would be horrendus...
the bad bit it's been down nearly 3 years......
the family dont want it due to the above costs.........
....
still wish I could have it tho.....

Can't pull it up with some 10 ton air bags? We cut 20 tonne concrete blocks out on the Thames river bed, they fastened air bags to them at low tide and when the tide came in up they came.

All the boat clubs are struggling, in fact all types of clubs are the same.
I have tried to explain to ours that these days people do not have just one hobby, they like to do a bit of everything, plus they often do not have tens of thousands to sink into an old boat, then even more to run the things.

That boat posted by The Menace is a proper Morecambe bay prawner or "Nobby", lovely boats but as you found when they come to the end of their working lives they become a money pit. Then its time for a major rebuild which will consume quite a few oak & larch trees & a lot of skill from the guy or guys doing it not to mention money!
I wonder if she is the one that a friend acquired a while back? he is a boatbuilder at Ulverston.

As far as boats like the Op's photo, **** has dropped out of the market & fuel & marina costs have killed it.

Old small fibreglass yachts are now effectively worthless, a mate bought a 23 footer a few weeks ago for £150, He has simply chopped the bottom of the boat out rond the engine & lowered it down to the floor, worth it with a good vetus diesel, rest of it is being stripped for bits & chopped up into a skip.

Well you’re a long time dead and if he can afford it, why the hell not, it’s a nice experience if you’ve deep pockets.

That’s about it, if you have the money and the time you can enjoy owning a boat, you do need both. A friend of mine bought a money pit of a floating gin palace,the running costs/upkeep eventually finished him, it was sold off for a fraction of what he paid for it. As the saying goes, if you can’t take a joke don’t join in.

And the one the op showed looked to be reasonably well maintained, I went to look at a couple, the owners didn’t have a clue what I was talking about regarding what needed done to bring them back to fully serviceable condition, a lot of these owners think an engine oil change once a year is fully serviced, they don’t know what a gimbal bearing and bellows are let alone tell you when they were replaced, most of these boats need a load of work, then you try to knock off a couple of grand off the price they think you’re taking the Mick.

These boats rot from the hull up, if the floor is soft, the stringers will likely be knackered, also likely the engine mounts which along with the stringers and transom are wooden encapsulated with fibre glass. Only badly so once the water gets in it rots them out leaving a fibre glass casing which looks solid until you drill into them and see the inside is mush. For every one good 90’s boat there are 9 duffers.

^^^^ I would second that, most modern powerboats and an awful lot of modern yachts are built on a production line, they are literally thrown together, staples, self tappers, pop rivets & bonding paste. When i started at Thames marine in 79 it took three of us three weeks to assemble a Mirage 28 from scratch, in 20 years time similar boats by volume makers were being knocked out in less than a week.
Effectively they are so poorly built it is a nightmare to refit or repair them.

A workmate pointed this out to me today. Said he was thinking of bidding on it but couldn't decide if it was worthwhile. I'm not really much into my boats but it seems like an awful lot of boat for the money. Didn't sell at 16,600 now it's re-listed with a 18.5k buy it now.

Hi mate I've been fixing these things for years lol. It has twin 5.7Lt petrol v8 engines (marinised chevy v8s) Each carburetor swallowing 17 gallons an hr at full throttle (alot less if you put put) with the world about to end even middle class people don't want to dumb 500 quids worth of petrol on a weekend out. Working class folk no way! Beautiful caravan though! But essentially it's a giveaway because of the petrol engines. It will be 290 VP stern drives on it too. Decent legs but usual corrosion issues in saltwater being aluminium / galvanic corrosion

A boat is only worth, what someone is willing to pay.

The buy it now price indicates what he's hoping to get.

Twin 5.7s oopphh, ouch.

Someone said average use, ten weekends, yeah I'd heard two weeks.

Agréé if you are handy, it's all doable, and with the internet you can find boat bits, new, at standard, not inflated chandlers and marinas prices

Sailing boats can have horrendous access to motors.

You must* winterise them in winter.

Reccomended you pull them out every five years..

Etc....

Older Cruisers rogues etc are heavily built hulls and although production boats they are generally better than a few other of the main leisure brands in my experience!

I've cut holes in boats to get to things.

Hull made first, stick engine in, attach deck / superstructure.

Cranes aren't cheap either.

I nearly had to do that to the old mans Sigma when my brother got in behind the engine through the cockpit locker and couldn't get him self out!

Top tip from a boatbuilder, "The amount of pleasure you get from a boat is in inverse proportion to its size & cost".
One of the best boats i ever had was a 16ft rowing skiff that was built in the 1930's as a hire skiff to work off the beach next to Southend pier.
When i bought her for £25 in 84 she was very old & tired. I bodged her up & used her for 5 years of fun & adventures until she finally gave up the ghost.
Never cost me more than £55 including buying her in the first place.
Get a small traditional sailing dinghy, Rowing skiff or canadian canoe, throw the outboard away, Get the oars or a paddle out & Go places a yacht or Gin palace with its big V8's cant go. Have an adventure at little cost to you or the environment.
My current favorite boat is a 17ft rowing skiff, she is GRP with wood fitout, light & fast under oars & with a lugsail for off the wind when she goes like the clappers!
