Are boats really worth so little these days?

I just bought one last year, a wee fletcher with a 75HP, its a rapid wee thing and great fun, but let’s face it you’re not going to sit in it with your feet up drinking a G and T

I’d like to get something bigger that you could stay in for a weekend but just with the speedboat I’ve come to the realisation that in the UK trying to get the stars to align as in getting days off during a weekend and when the weather is good is not as easy as it might sound so it could end up sitting for weeks not getting used, I could maintain it and store it over the winter but in order to justify the summer berth costs it would have to be something which is used often.
Maybe after retirement!

That's. Nothing. I used to have a Jetski with a 1100 two stroke tripple. 120HP I could burn through 10 gallon in 4 hours!

They are not fine if, they are petrol v6/8 and have outdrives.

the marina near us is dead quiet these days. I reckon it’s a combination of fuel prices and the fact that in lockdown people didn’t miss their boats like they would if they really enjoyed them. You have to be a real optimist to keep a boat.

A friend of mine has very similar in his field, a late 90’s Maxum 3300 I think, twin mercruisers. He was given it by the previous owner who just wanted rid of it as it was a money pit costing a fortune in storage fees alone.

Guess what, friend is now trying to give it away without even using it, as he too has realised the previous owner was correct, and it’s not even costing him anything to store it!

Like most things I guess...I think sail boats aren't as bad provided everything is in reasonable condition. Just got to keep on top of the maintenance.

Couple v8s are never going to be cheap!

Mine costs me £80 a month to moor on the river Avon near Evesham. It’s in the boat yard now for winter and I need to do some stuff to it. I wish I had some land to pop it on closer to home.

I keep mine on a mooring in a harbour.

It's around £18 per meter per month.

Compare that to the car park at £1.40 PER HOUR and it's a bargain.

Even if I am lucky enough to get the car into one of the (very few) spaces where you can get a full day parking for £11 the boat still works out cheap..

try racing one, it was like ripping up 20s when we were on 15 quid a week, but when your sat in the old folks home weeing yourself, you might have the memories, others only dreamed off!

You couldn't give me one of those. Now, if it had sails............

The cloth engine can still be expensive, parking, crane lifts etc, but a to b cost are far more sensible till you break something.

At least the boat in the opening post has aged well in terms of styling; it still looks impressive to someone that’s perhaps otherwise not into boats to know it’s 30 years old. A lot of the 80’s boats are much more squarer and lurid (windscreens/ decals etc) and really do stick out and show thier age now; albeit some do have character.

Best thing to remember when buying any boat - but could be applied to any hobby item - Is that ‘a cheap boat is an expensive boat..’.

It's a fairly common boat,
I'd be interested to know the deprecation if you compare it to a common car of the same age and original retail price?

Its the cost V opportunity to use it, I would have thought it cheaper to hire when required. Local boat yard is full of part repaired boats, its like cars etc some people just like owning them and potter about cleaning and fixing them

the best way to enjoy boating is to do it on someone else's boat .
