Apparently it makes you an expert these days.

Earlier this year there was an expert witness specialising in carbon credits.

He provided expert testimony in quite a few court cases. Eventually he got caught out and all the cases where he gave evidence are now in question.

Turns out he hasn’t even read the most basic book on the subject

When I find someone who knows what I want to learn I more than happy to work for free for a day here and there to absorb knowledge.
Theres a few people Ive learned from post apprenticeship, id never let them know though

There is a chap I sort of know and he built a lovely tilt n slide hiab truck which I complimented him on.
He had sold it on and was making another and I said ‘now that’s going to be really good’ he was offended and said the first was impossible to improve on.
I told him that if he was a clever as he thought he was five years on he should be able to improve and refine. Intelligence gives the ability to evolve and learn.

Listen to anyone. I sold a bit of machinery to a diyer and he looked at a job I was doing and told me how he did it. Totally against recognised practice and wrong and a way that my education wouldn’t let me do it.
I listened and thought that’s much better and use his ‘hack’ method to this day!

no matter what your trade you still learn something new even after 45 years + things change and you have to up date

There was a (so-called) police ballistics expert over here who was called into court several times to give evidence against lads who were appealing firearms licence refusals or revolkations, especially for pistols.

In open court the council for the lad who had his licence revolked, had this expert in the box and smelled blood. He asked the expert what made him a ballistics expert, a question he did not want to answer, he pressed it and the judge ruled the question one he must answer. His answer as to how he was an expert ? "Your honour, youtube videos" !

He was laughed out of court.

The legal bod was probably immediately suspicious when the so-called 'expert' didn't introduce himself with a ream of qualifications and experience, as is fairly normal from real expert witnesses.

Depends what the information is, on jobs i might need a technical detail instead of guessing i can look at the online building regs or the nhbc detail drawings.

You cant use it to become a brain surgeon, but it certainly can be used to advance existing knowledge

I would say you can certainly learn my trade on the internet with lots of trial and error it depends on the individual. Some people will read one article and take it as gospel others will read and read whilst confirming the validity of the information

I got offered two apprenticeships at the same time, plumbing or electrical. I had done work experience in plumbing and loved it but the job offer only turned up at 8pm on a Sunday night saying to be at Willesden college the next morning! A bit late and I'd already accepted the electrical job.
£27.50 a week for the first year on a YTS scheme with block release to college 4 weeks at work 4 weeks at college. It was one of those 4 weeks at college (Willesden) that I got expelled for basically messing around! I got in with the wrong crowd and me and another got slung out! :doh:

The boss told me to get on another course or your sacked! :waving:

Work life lesson No1, don't take the ****!

I found a new course at Harrow college and it was a totally different place, much better class of student and the tutors were great. I flew the first years exams with scores in the 90% range :laughing:

Pay went up to about £56 a week.
There was another apprentice on the firm that started the same time as I did that was useless. He'd only come in 4 days a week and failed every exam he attempted. I later found out he was on £10 a week more than me if he made it in for a full weeks work! :mad:

I used to ride my BMX 5 miles each way every day in all weathers to get to the yard for 8 o'clock!
Work life lesson No2 , don't let others take the ****!

I did my 4 years and was made up to electrician and was promptly layed off with no redundancy etc! That was the recession in the early 1990's "Lawson's legacy"
They didn't want to pay me more than twice the money to do the job I was already doing!
All those years of poor earnings and people taking the **** did pay off though as I'm now doing alright.
My mum always said "get a trade behind you and you'll always have work" she wasn't far off. :hug:

Using a slightly different analogy, it’s a bit like cooking

Recipes are there to give an idea of what to do. There has to be some underlying skill and knowledge that forms the basis of that experiment

I suppose it’s like most trade based skills

Yup. Il read four or 5 methods. Extract the best bits.

This is where I did my apprenticeship, it was regarded the best apprentice training in Queensland at the time. I felt very lucky to have got in from hundreds of applicants. It didn’t disappoint, it really was a great place to live, work and learn. Great folk running the scheme and worked with some fantastic tradesmen and apprentices. If it wasn’t so remote I would never have left.

He is, or was an Inspector in the guards here. I believe the super or chief super put him up to it.
