Totally different experience for me. I went to uni, studied a highly vocational course. Still in the same trade now. Graduated in 1994 and got my first job on £21k a year. Worked with the same firm for 24 years. By the time I left I was one of the directors. Salary went up a bit
What were you studying?I dropped out of the academic route; regret it now and then, but didn't feel like I had much choice back then.
I would work from 5 30 pm on racing cars until just before last orders

I find it very sad the way things have changedJohn, these days if you ask the youngsters to do anything. Your usually met by “that’s not written into my contract” or “I don’t start work till 9 and finish at 5”
I find it very sad the way things have changed
I still work for "free knowledge and beer"
On steam waggons and traction engines
Haven’t they just.
I’m aware of an apprentice in a very big firm. He didn’t really do anything so most folk gave up on him.
He’s failed his main exams three times.
He’s still going as offerd to work for nothing for a month it will look “Bad” if he doesn’t make it
Free knowledge and beer is always good
40 years ago we had a lad walk in to the garage looking for a job
We were quiet at the time so said nothing at the moment
He came back 2 weeks later looking for a job
He wanted to work for a month for no money
Then if he was no good he would just go away
After 3 days we gave him a job
I get the odd days work in the big technical college in town. Its a scheme where youngsters are brought in and do a few days in each trade, Sheet metal work, welding, plumbing, cabinet making, car mechanics and i do the fitting one. Its pathetic usually, most turn up late and have no enthusiasm at all, they go on their morning break and come back late from that too, as they disappear to play pool. After lunch its normally on three or four return and thats that.
I was trying to get into a trade after i left school and found it next to impossible, they get a golden opportunity dangled under their noses and do not bother with it. They want cushy jobs sitting in a heated office gawking at a computer, no one wants to get their hands dirty.
Never have we had so much free information and people who are so wilfully ignorant
