old haulage firm long gone 70s had 5 wagons used to put old engine oil into diesel storage tank to stop people stealing it old 1418 and 1924 mercs used to run on it no bother

but i think you mean ships diesel like tar has to be either 30 or 40 c to load into tanks they use steam to heat it
hence why it takes so long to start a ships engine sure someone with more shops knowledge will be along shortly

pumps used to have a yellow pipe stopped it a few years ago caused problems to seals etc

Old engine oil used to be illegal don't think it's changed due to it not being a waste product it has to have tax paid to be used on the highways so I assume it's going to be the same fines as running red if you was caught

remember im talking 1970s here lots of things people did or shouldn't do im talking maybe 50 gallon engine oil to 2000 gallon derv it stopped people nicking it because it was Black that was the point of it

I watched a program on TV where "black diesel" was being discussed by plod - the main problem they had with it was that it was commonly being used to mask the colour of red diesel. There didn't seem to be an issue with the use of the engine oil itself - or at least they weren't aware of a problem with it, they just seemed bemused by it.

As someone who runs all their cars on bio, and had a vicious enough neighbour (in the past) who would call every authority that she could think of, I have some experience in both the chemistry, and the legal details of making bio.

Now, Im not going to offer justification for my next comment, as it will just go on and on, but, unfortunately, a considerable amount of this thread is nonsense.

If anyone should really want to get involved, I would enthuse them to join one of the UK based forums where people, inc myself, actually do this stuff, rather than just regurgitate previously read misinformation.

Again I do not want to get drawn in to an discussion (argument) on specifics, as I don't have the energy or motivation - sorry.

You might want to supply a set of links to other forums so people can be directed there for clarification

Right, I've been through and there is no mention whatsoever of 'one machine/plant per vehicle'.

Think about it.

Economy comes with scale. The larger the scale of production the more economical it becomes.

Why would any legislation be put in place that would restrict producers to the most inefficient process?

This is not my bag but the regs did used to have a restriction to stop equipment sharing groups.
IE one plant one tax free allowance of 2500L per year.

Regulation 8A of the Biofuels and Other Fuel Substitutes (Payment of Excise Duties etc) (Amendment) Regulations 2007 (SI 1234 of 2007) which came into force on 30 June 2007, has a condition that separate producers at the same premises or sets of premises must register and account for duty if the total of that production is 2,500 litres or more a year. The threshold does not apply separately to each individual producer at the same premises - or sets of premises. The producer(s) must register if total annual production at the same premises or sets of premises is 2,500 litres or more.

Partnerships, collectives and cooperatives (including non-profit making organisations) are liable to register and account for duty if total annual production is 2,500 litres or more.

Old engine oil destroys the red dye test results, that said a few years has gone by and they may well be on top of that. Being a saddo I was reading a VOSA mag while in the test station , there was an article on one of the modern trucks drip feeding old oil from the sump into the injection system in tiny amounts while an oil reservoir topped it up. Its basically a way of extending a trucks service intervals which must be handy for long hauls, anyway amongst the comments it was pointed out that this oil has not had the correct duty paid on it Thats the kind of mindset your dealing with, no mention of the gazillions in fuel revenue they have had off the haulier

I'm not entirely sure whether it's legal here at all, diluted or otherwise, for road use.

I got quite interested in this idea for short while.

As has been mentioned, there is no duty on engine oil so not allowed from that perspective. I also read some legal brumpf that said using it on the road was illegal full stop. Not a valid form of disposal.

That didn't stop me experimenting in a couple tractors. All ran fine but I only got up to about 10% in anything that wasn't ancient. At that rate there was a noticibly constant haze and a smell.

I stopped pretty quick, it simply wasn't worth the risk. If you used a diesel generator though, waste oil mixed with heating oil might be worth considering.

I think the info from the states might be slightly skewed as their oil will have so much less soot in it (maybe?) due to their fear of anything diesel.

I think they were wise to that as I seem to remember the guy did get "done" for having actual red diesel, I can't remember if it was a roadside test or a lab result.
