Anyone use WVO?

I got some very strange looks in Tescos car park pouring sunflower oil straight into the Surf... ( all the old Landcruisers / Hi-lux' s / Surfs etc can run on wvo with no mods other than thinning in winter)
90p a litre at the time rather than £1.40 odd for diesel!
You have to be careful of the paintwork though as veg oil can knackered it, also it's been reported that it clears a lot of accumulated dirt out of the fuel system so the fuel filter needs changing more often at first.
If I move to a house with more room outside I'll probably make a wvo filtering station, it gives me a warm feeling inside knowing "the man" isn't getting loads of tax money to squander.

Edit just to make it clear, the wvo needs filtering first but the sunflower oil from Tesco can be poured straight in.

It was stopped 1st April 2014. If your application, big or small was submitted prior to the end date it had to be applied.
No new applications were accepted after that date. The same happened to solar panels.

The big fuel companies did not get forced.
They add it as it makes them look good, they get more "Fuel to sell for bigger profits.

The only grants the fuel companies now get is to find new sources of Bio fuels, hence why shell are investing in sugar cane.
The green waste materials being used to make an alcohol based fuel.
Honda are doing similar for the waste from rice.

Now the play on words again and an obvious contradiction in your previous posts.

Applications were changed and weren't accepted as they changed the system and changed the names and you applied for subsidies through different routes and there were various other changes aimed more towards commercial environments which affected private individuals, so your claims about subsidies is incorrect and supported by the various organisations themselves which totally contradict your claims.

All fuel companies were forced to add bio element to fuel by EU legislation and EU Directives and they are out there for people to read, so yes they were forced and again the EU legislation and Directives are there for people to read which totally disproves your claims.

Nobody made any claims about major fuel companies receiving subsidies, so I would suggest a little deflection on your part.

UK is the UK and nowhere else, the EU is the member states which make up the EU and as EU directives apply in the UK (at least for now) and we are bound by them

Waste oil, cooking fats and oils were not expensive to recycle as in the UK they were brunt in power stations. Portsmouth Dock yard was doing that as far back as the 1970's.
How do I know, I was on "jankers" and had to collect the stuff and hand pump it blending tanks.

Waste oil is expensive to recycle as you cannot get rid of it by simply burning it by tipping it into a boiler, what was done in the past cannot be done now and most veg oil which is recycled has to be turned into a product which meets the requirements to allow it to be burned and the largest market is the road fuels market as it can be burned after transesterification by adding it directly to diesel, or by using it directly as a fuel, It merely changes its name from a waste product to a fuel by doing this; it can also be burned as a fuel in a bio oil burner as long as it is the predominant fuel source as it then becomes a fuel powering something to do something else.

By burning it an engine or a bio oil burner you are burning it under controlled conditions with suitable emissions equipment and have some control of the emissions it produces.

I would suggest you actually read the EU directives and understand the subject instead of trying to win an argument, at least you would have a much greater understanding of the subject.

Fuel standards are international. Not EU.
They are blended to a IS standard not a EU standard.

Didn't Tesco and other supermarkets try to restrict the sale of VO to prevent people using it as road fuel a couple of years ago? I know our Tesco put the prices up to over that of road diesel and limited it to sales of 4L per person and the irony was they sold it in 1L, 2L, 3L, and 5L drums, so how could they restrict sales to 4L and sell it in 5L drums.

They tried, but it was challenged in a court as it breached trading rules on pricing and Human rights.

It was Asda, Sainsbury and Lidil who tried to, but like all the rest Tesco follow suit. But all backed down, when the courts ruled in favour of the individuals. No court settlement was reached as it was a clear case of either breaches in UK and EU law.
How ever they can restrict the amount any one person can buy in one transaction or a set period of time.

Oddly some medication is exempt.

I bought 800 ltrs ish from asda in 4ltr tubs x4 in a box back in the day when they had it on special ! they never questioned me---did it a couple of times when it was buy 2 get one free they just put a special order in. came on a pallet

The Tesco Extra will do that for you. Some will ask for prove of use, not always.
Check in store, as not all will.

You not be able to keep the pallet, well you are not meant to.

Rubbish, base oils are to an international standard but not fuels, fuel standards vary across the world and EU members states have harmonised fuel standards.

Since 1993 we have had harmonised fuel standards going back to the first CEN standard which was voluntary and laid out the FAME standard which would be the Fatty Acid Methyl Esther content to be allowed in future fuels, it also set a minimum standard for sulphur and emissions levels in exhaust emissions and set the standard to EN 590.

This moved on to the EU directive 93/12/EEC which cut the sulphur emissions by three quarters from 2000 ppm to 500 ppm and came into force in 1996.

EN 93/12/EEC changed again and reduced the sulphur emissions down to 350ppm for diesels and 150ppm for petrols and was introduced in 2000.

This has continued until today where sulphur emissions are down to 10ppm for both diesels and petrols.

they tried to say the 205 ltr contains were not approved but they were and had the correct stamp on them.

I do the same with a 1000ltr stillage, ok if they have a truck pump but a pain if its the car one that keeps stopping after so many litres. I keep my 5000 litre tank topped up this way , its also a good way of being blissfully unaware of how much fuel the trucks are using .

The problem is most fryer fats and oils are on a suppliers contract where all the used oil goes back for recycling. My local chippy gets 25p a litre back on the used oil, which goes into a locked drum, as they've already had oil scroungers round the back. Small resturants and pubs are the best bet.

Re: ethanol content...

All "standard" fuels currently supplied should be/are either E5 or E10, the only exception to date has been Shell, who's premium, or "nitro" as labelled, unleaded is a non-ethanol containing fuel.

There have been many posts about this on the "piston heads" forum, as, ethanol in any proportion is no good for two strokes, garden machinery included...

You can buy stabilisers, produced by Oregon, or de-oxidisers, to inhibit, or remove the ethanol, but they aren't great. They work best with "dry" fuel, as by its nature, ethanol is hygroscopic and adsorbs moisture...


If you either use, or process, WVO for fuel use, you need to be careful with regards to HMRC.
If the total volume of WVO falls below a set value, you don't pay duty, likewise, if you process, or de-esterify, the oil, as long as you stay below a threshold you again, don't pay duty.
Remember, WVO or VO, is sold as a foodstuff and isn't subject to VAT, fuel is...
