I won that boiler for £45. If its all good then that will be a good price to get the washer steaming again! Just arranging a friend who works in Norfolk to pick it up for me. I will report back when I have it. I can tidy up the rusty trolley base and actually fix that leaky unloader valve that started this thread!
Just putting this all back together. One more question/ request for help with the search for a part... the rubber boot that links the boiler fan to the chimney is pretty knackered on my unit and the ebay seller didnt include the one from their (despite me asking), but, i cant fine one anywhere! Any ideas where I can find one?
Well, we have steam again! I will post a few pics later. A couple more questions though.
Bearing in mind the mention of a potentially incorrect injector nozzle above, I used the one that came with the new boiler tube. It was quite smoky. I switched back to the old one and it was less so. Both seem to cause some white smoke to come out of the boiler tube after they are tured off - i.e. if I release the lance trigger or if I turn off the heat setting - any ideas?
Possibly related to the above- the injector has two flats on it - I presume these indicate the level that the injector should sit with regard to the locking screw in the heater head?
it is working though, not leaking from the base and my o ring replacement in the unloader valve has fixed that leak too. The iner tube seems to have worked too!
Whilst running, I have solved the issue of the smoke I think - both sensors (i think one is a thermostat) at the inlet and outlet of the coil needed re-wiring. It is burning cleanly now.
The last problem is smoke when i turn off the thermostat the burner stops and i get a LOT of white smoke coming from the chimney (smells like diesel). It does this with both injectors - I have a video but I am not sure how to share it on here?
As you don't know how it was working before you got it some smoke was probably going to happen. If you have run it for a while then its possible any extra fuel has been burnt off and why it now burns clean. If it smells like diesel check that the fuel flow is stopping. When you turn the thermostat off does the fan stop? If it does then its possible to have some diesel drip from the nozzle and land on the hot insulator at the bottom causing smoke & fumes. Some manufactures that use vertical boilers fit a solenoid near the nozzle to try to prevent this, others don't turn the fan off, whilst it doesn't stop the fuel drip it does tend to blow any fumes away
Thanks for this. It was working last summer and I dont remeber this smoke, BUT it had a hole in the base (as in the earlier photos) such that you could see the flames underneath when it was burning so prehaps any diesel dripping through wasnt hanging around inside!
When i turn the thermostat off, the fan seems to stay on initially (so you can see it push the smoke out) - this might last 30 secs before it clears. It is thick and white to start with so I am fairly sure its diesel (and it stinks of diesel)!
I ran it briefly without the injector connected so i could watch the diesel flow and it does seem to run on briefly when you would expect it to stop. Thos would link with some fuel leaking through after the burner turns off.
Sounds like your fuel solenoid is not shutting off properly. Is it a suntec fuel pump, we used to have problems with bad fuel solenoids on them, the only cure was to fit a danfoss pump!
Thanks. It looks quite a simple setup. It is a small pump, sits off the side of the fan and could be driven by the fan. It has a three pin plug into the top of it. I wont be by the machine for a few days, but will get some pics at the weekend.
It's probably driven off the end of the fan via a plastic coupling. The 3-pin plug is likely the connection to the fuel solenoid, sometimes looks like an electric kettle plug. If you unplug that when the boiler is heating it should stop burning straight away with no white smoke. If not take the solenoid apart & check for dirt in it or a broken spring or a damaged/perished rubber seal on the end of the piston.
I had a search for pumps after your post yesterday and it became clear I was unknowingly describing the solenoid plug above - as you say, it looks like a small kettle plug.
Thanks for your help. I will report back when I have cleaned it up.
