Can anyone give me a quick idiots guide to removing the coil? Its not completely obvious and some bits are quite crusty so I dont want to remove bits I dont need to! It looks like the Lavor brand boiler.

Take top off and remove exhaust, remove pipes from bottom. Possibly two large brass nuts on the bottom as well to remove. Hopefully coil will then lift out.

Well. What a crusty mess. The rugbys starting so I have come in but I guess the base comes out somehow and seperates from the inner chimney?

The boiler coil is VERY crusty inside and i have bent one of the pipe ends getting it all undone so I am thinking new coil probably - will see once I have it out properly. The pipe ends are 25cm apart.

Comments on the pics and likely parts needed are very welcome as always!

Definitely seen better days. Does indeed look like the base comes off rather than the top. Looks like it needs a lot of work to get it back together properly. Wouldn’t have thought it was lavor from that as the pipes are on one side and closer together on the current ones

If pipe centres are 250mm it could be a portotecnica boiler but more dimensions and number of coils would help.

Thanks. I will do some more measurements once i get it out. I'm scared of braking that plate up at the bottom if i am too rough.

The 250mm is where i think the centres would be if i hadnt bent the pipe end. I cant see any markings on it to identify the boiler make unfortunately.

Current lavor boilers have the fan fixed to the rest of the case rather than mounted on the chassis.

I'm scared of braking that plate up at the bottom if i am too rough.

That believe it or not should be an insulator and shouldn’t have the two additional holes through the bottom.

They looked a little too perfect to have appeared there!! I wonder if i can fill them with fire cement?

It looks like some of the portotecnica coils have two stand off feet possibly where those holes are. Fire cement works as there shouldn’t be anything going out of the bottom. Everything should exit through the exhaust at the top. Maybe a little exhaust gases escaping around the pipes but really nowhere else

Directly opposite to were the flame jet points you should have a solid plate of a fire resistant material to stop the flame burning through the steel boiler housing. Looking at the end of your housing that has already happened. It can be cast fire cement or a thick asbestos type sheet which dissolves if you get it wet!

I'm not familiar with that particular boiler but it looks like you might need a full boiler as that housing is very rotten. You will have a lot of patching to do & I suspect that the inside of the housing will be rotten too. The housing is likely double skinned with the air passing between the skins before getting to the burner head.

A new boiler will probably not be much more than a new coil, parts for those Italian washers are fairly cheap.

Danny - thats a good offer. I’ll be travelling from London to Wales at the end of Feb so I could potentially pass by depending on where you are. I do London to Cornwall and back weekly but thats not so close!

Ok. Curiosity got the better of me so I had a break from work and went out to the shed. It didn't want to come apart but it did yield in the end.

Everything bar the round metal base plate (can just about make out whats left of it in the pics I posted above) and the coil could be re-assembled.

The insulating base piece with the holes in it eventually came free of the inner stainless boiler chimney. Those four holes do look like they are meant to be there to house the two water connections and two feet (one of which has rotted away) on the coil. There is a plate that is supposed to go beneath them that i mention in the sentence above but that has largely completely disintegrated.

The coil is 14 double loops high. Measurements in the pics. I have ruined it beyond repair as one of the connections was so tight i have kinked the inlet/outlet tube but looking at the state of the corrosion on the coil, it would be hard to repair even if it was just a pinhole!

Yep - its pretty good. The top ring where the flame comes through is a little melted round the edges, but the sleeve is good.

Just found this - this is identical to what I have. They are a bit far away, but I may ask if they could courier it. I think it identifies the brand too if it is correct!

As it should have feet i think its a portotecnica burner coil as that's the only one's Ive every seen with feet. I'm not saying it isn't fitted to the wildcat as a lot of machine manufactures use off the shelf boilers rather than make there own.

Looking at that top ring I would suggest that somebody has fitted the wrong burner jet, maybe fitted a 60 degree instead of a 45 degree. The wider flame cone would melt the metal like that.
