To weigh in on the actual thread - I agree it's tricky to value one person's time against another but most things can be worked out if both parties are reasonable surely?

It's certainly the way it should be, but the bit highlighted is the problem. A lot, or most, people now fall into one of two groups. Either too full of themselves and out for their own interests above others. Or, they're sick of being on the receiving end of the first group and now take the 'if you can't beat them, join them' approach.

I find myself down that route more and more, the question "Why should I when ....." goes through my mind fairly frequently. It's not a good thing, and I'd prefer it weren't so, but the alternative is even less appealing so

Try getting a real electrician these days! Loads about with a gold card but half of them are complete chancers.

And yet getting decent work without one is hard, and unless you have ticked the right boxes and jumped through the hoops, obtaining one is supposed to be impossible. Actual competency be dammed.
Yet another scheme that has been implemented in the name of improving standards but only serves to make the scheme provider money.

I was really shocked to discover recently that £45k ON BENEFITS is easily achievable, I wish I earned £45k!


This is where it's at ^^^ Be different, it's you right! Then get paid to be out of work and different. Winds me up.
I took on an apprentice years ago, it was bloody murder, the box ticking and paperwork made it too much trouble as I was really getting nothing out of it.

I remember putting an ad iin the job centre in Bridge road Stockton -on tees one time: "wanted, Driver, clean licence (but would take into account one endorsement) hours to suit, part time or full time." Couple days later, phone call from the job centre: "have any of the 18 applicants been placed with you?" "Placed with us? We haven't seen one yet!" Some people just don't want to work.

just to make it clear i do like driving around and have had jobs in the wagons

but theres more to the story than meets the eye

driving agencys have ruined that score including the companies most drivers are treated like replaceable monkeys
they also dont care about your license ( even ive been called in with 3hrs worth of sleep, if refused you dont get anymore job offers from the agency as they make this very clear on there induction at the agency )
theres many job adverts that state full time when they are not ( been there myself )

the hrs arnt good and neither is the pay and its also a dead end job with no better job prospects within it ( pay should reflect there importance role but it dosnt )
to be honest your better off packing shelves for the same pay with less hrs if the truth is known

whilst ive seen it often enough on this forum

i dont see why an accountant should get better pay than the lower workers that actually do the job ( accountant is more digital to me )

yet can cause more trouble with there saving ideas for the company than listen to the workers who know there job

If you want a giggle I can send you our accounts woman number and see how awkward the woman is just for the sake of it

She must have been related to hitler I swear

We now use a courier to send something that was £3.80 each way in our own car

Now costs £40 each way due to her ineptness

Yet she won’t be brought to task as the boss sits next to her and she brown noses him

I can’t tell you how much she costs the company making peoples days bad just to get a power trip over it

but if you think a plumber repairing a drain for your crap is better than an accountant then many are welcome to live in there own crap as my job is more important

its also the same with the ones that pump out all of there sewage out of the cess pit

or a driver that is delivering your materials or food to the food stacker makes no difference

the same can be said for many a trade out there

our jobs are more important than the office pen pushers

Your off the mark a shade

I trained as a mechanic and it’s the simple things you learned like doubling up a spanner

When I first started restoring cars it was brilliant but the skills I learned just in that portion of my career take years to hone

Panel beating
Spraying
Welding
Mechanics(fault finding not servicing a car)

Can’t be taught as quickly as driving a forklift or stacking a shelf

Same goes for any skilled trade

You can do a management course but your personality won’t let you be a good manager

Do an apprenticeship in mechanics and you can work on any manufacturer of car

Gaz I'm not sure here but I think you might be misreading slightly, I didn't mean to imply any job is better than another at all, and I don't want to wade into the who should get paid more but it's definitely not reasonable how much some get paid. All I meant is that in terms of a skill share surely there is a balance to be struck?
Like it doesn't have to be a 1 hour for 1 hour thing but instead a system might have I'll do your car servicing for a year if you rewire my living room? I think a lot of people work like this with family and friends anyway, just both parties have to agree on a relative value for their work which is not an easy job as I'm sure most people think their job is very valuable!

People who save/make money for them get rewarded.

Thats about how it works…..if your a good accountant, working for a major, its all about chargeable hours, same in legal. They can charge huge amounts per hour, purely and simply because companies can justify paying it.

They justify the bill, because of how much it saves, or makes them. I like my accountant as a cheque arrived today from HMRC.
