Anyone else find turning relaxing?

Not if you have the fast feed on and you get distracted you are not

That's why posh lathes have gauge trays with micrometer stops, and give a gentle click and disengage the feed...

I find turning relaxing, but watching the shaper is even more so.

The whole thing of concentrating long enough on all the aspects of producing something shiny and perfect, out of a lump of rusty scrap, beats almost any other form of 'relaxation' I can think of except maybe going down the pub amongst good company..

Providing your shed is a no go area, entry strictly by invitation at all times!

IMO one thing that's better is similar, making biodiesel from used veg oil. Take some repellent rancid waste and make sparkly goodness you can run an engine on.

Down the pub we find reversing that process by turning sparkly goodness into rancid waste can be quite relaxing...

I have a couple of ideas, ER16 chuck on a spindle running in a couple of bearings. Weld a length of 12mm bar to side of some 32mm round stock, clamp the bar in tool post to bore round for bearings.
Darn I now need a boring head.

Guess which pillock went & overcut the register for their ER chuck? Thought balls to it & cut & shoved a couple of 0.04?, (the thinnest gauge), pieces of shim between them, (old feeler gauges come in handy). Less than 2 thou runout on the internal face of the chuck, at the outer end. Could have absolutely kicked myself though.

Welding is the same, but I wouldn't want to have to do it all day every day for a wage.

If it's piecework I'd agree. I was lucky in that most of the firms I worked for produced one-off stuff - everyday was a new challenge. As for turning, when I had the chance to do some, I used to enjoy it.

On that one yes as it says .001" if it has the extra digit (.0005" or .0001") it changes how it is read. There is also some metric thing but I haven't a clue about that

That's why I took the photo. Thought it was that scale. So that's 0.05mm out then? I'm not farting about trying to set it any closer. Likely to just lead to frustration.

I just find time spent in the garage allows me to switch off from other pressures, it's not always constructive but better than sat in front of the TV

Yes, quit when you are ahead and get back to relaxed turning, after all we are not buying close tolerance collets.

I don't use my lathe that much, so yes, I do enjoy making stuff on it. Mostly to produce bits of kit for the workshop that would otherwise be too expensive to buy, so doubly satisfying when I use them them. Like the draw bending dies for tube.
What could be close to extasy would be a nice bench top mill. Even less needed, but when is that a deciding factor?

Just used that collet chuck. Luxury. So much easier than faffing around with the 3 jaw, for small pieces.

ive usually got at least two machines running, usually repair work, usually needed by yesterday, usually work hardened to hell or no good unworn datums to clock off, the list goes on

I still love turning, I first used a lathe in metalwork in school, aged 14, it took me 40 years to get my act together and buy myself a lathe, now I have 3 lathes and 55years late I still enjoy it as much.
