Matt,Bearing in mind it's yonks since I last used a DTI, it signifying a couple of thou if it's moving two graduations on the scale?

Strictly speaking that is a dial gauge, so the change in the reading should be correct.
A DTI is generally a comparative instrument and usually moves in an arc, so the actual readings may not be accurate, but are indicative of a change. Usually used where the correct setting of, say, a vise or workpiece gives no change as the instrument is run along an edge or surface.
